When I got my MY97 new way back in January 97 there was an option to have the steering wheel retrimmed in leather. Looked a lot better and more importantly felt nicer to hold and you retained the airbag. Still not the best steering wheel in the world but much improved!

At the time as the car was new there were warranty implications removing the airbag wheel so I went that route. I have a copy of an old Performance car where someone with a MY96 had changed his airbag wheel for a Momo wheel so it must be possible!

Hope this helps :)

Yes mate. I have a Momo Millenium. Looks very nice. I picked mine up without the standard Momo airbag job so I dont know how hard it is to change them. Took me 5 mins to put my new one on though. Obviously Drivers Airbag light came on the dash board. Its the 280mm so just has that sport "go-kart" feel as well.

The problem is that I can't get a boss to fit because of some bits that are something to do with the old airbag. If I remove the bit I am talking about I lose the horn (ooh err) and also the indicator clicky off thing. Also looks like I would have to cut the plastic that surrounds the steering column. I have tried a raid boss and also a momo boss.

Just wondered if anyone had experienced similar and how you overcame it ?

mmmmm. Sorry mate as I didn't fit it myself I wouldn't know. My boss kit was from Jamex but luckily it fit the new momo one without any problems. Horn and indicators are ok. Doesn't look like mines been cut away though.

Sorry.

do you remember off hand how much the boss was ???

i fitted a sparco steering wheel with a momo hubkit from demon tweeks for about £20. you have to disarm the airbag, remove the wheel and take out a weird black disc with a coiled wire in it. it was then a case of joining a wire to the existing horn and fraying the end. this frayed end then has to be positioned so it touches the copper ring on the hub kit. sounds like a bit of a botch job but its the only way round it and that is how a ford xr2i horn works as standard! the other downsides are that you lose your indicator cancel tabs so this has to be done manually, you also have a warning light on your dash for the airbag. i checked with the mot and it will still pass and its a hell of an improvement on the original. e-mail me if you have any more questions on jedijam1@aol.com, hope this helped and i haven't bored you to death!
