Time Commanders
8.00-9.00pm BBC TWO In this exciting game of military strategy, wannabe warriors enter a virtual world and take on the greatest generals in history – from Julius Caesar to Napoleon – in an attempt to overturn history. In the specially designed studio, a battlefield map is spread across the computerised floor and the team is faced with a giant wallscreen. The team’s task is to recreate key battles in an attempt to devise winning tactics to defend the country from invasion. When the grand strategy has been deliberated and decided, they send their troops into combat, co-ordinating their soldiers via their PCs. In the first programme in the series, an amateur dramatics team from Manchester is faced with the task of taking control of Hannibal’s Carthaginian army on the snowy battlefield of Trebia in 218 BC. Using hi-tech, real-time computer graphics, the team attempts to reproduce the tactical genius of the great Carthaginian general against a better-equipped and highly disciplined Roman army. Observing the team’s every move and scrutinising its military tegy are two experts, Dr Aryeh Nusbacher (Senior Lecturer in War Studies at Sandhurst) and Mike Loades (historical weapons specialist), who also reveal just how Hannibal fought the actual battle over 2,000 years ago. Or am I the only sad one..... :p Edit to add... On afterwards is this... Seven Wonders Of The Industrial World Thu 4 Sep 21:00 - 21:50 BBC Two The Great Ship: New series dramatising seven epic tales from the industrial revolution, beginning with Isambard Kingdom Brunel's ill-fated attempts to build the largest ship in the world. Thursday viewing just got better :) Will have to set the video though. Can't see Mrs Nimbus wanting to watch either of these... [Edited by Nimbus - 9/2/2003 4:02:05 PM] |
No,there's at least 2 of us.

Another sad git here......hope it's as interesting as I hope!
|
UB, Restoration isn't on after accoring to the on-line shedule. It's Seven Wonders of the Industrial World :).
|
Just a reminder. It's on tonight....
Looks like a glorified game of Age of Empires.. :) |
When I saw the advert I turned to MrsREV and said "ooh, I bet thats good". She raised an eyebrow and turned to page 237 of Bridget Jones's Diary.
|
Looks like a glorified game of Age of Empires The whole thing felt very amateurishly produced. A great concept, but let down by an uncharismatic presenter, a dull studio and weak structure. |
I agree it could have been good but wasn't
|
The 'commanders' had way too much information. First of all there was no 'fog of war' and secondly they had instant communications between generals a lieutenants.
In the real battle they would have to send runners between the front lines and scout to map out where the troops were. It was just a large online version of command and conquer without the FOW bits. |
You have to admit though - Rome: Total War looks f**king amazing. :D
|
The idea for the program is good, in reality it was disjointed & simplistic in some ways, overall worth a watch, I would love to see them tackling "Hurtgen Forest" ;)
|
Good few weeks into the run now which goes up to Christmas. It might have a few flaws but it's original and innovative TV in my book.
I'd love to get in to some lectures by Dr Aryeh Nusbacher. He's very articulate, his knowledge and enthusiam make me want to learn more. |
