I have been playing with my switches on my MY03 Preza

The fog lights or are they driving lights are puzzling me

When can I use them and what are they intended for?
What’s the law covering there use?

Brun 27 August 2003 05:22 AM

If they come on with the main beam then they are driving lights, but if they have their very own switch then they are fogs.
If they are fogs then you can only legally use then in poor visibility conditions and IIRC that is defined as 100m.
If you whack em on in normal driving conditions then you risk a fine and being branded a bellend from people such as myself :p

Ajax 27 August 2003 11:51 AM

Brun: Just wanted to know the definitive answer, Thanks.

I have seen so many drivers including Scoob’ drivers using then all the time, I just wondered.

Cant really see that they cause a problem to anyone when they are on, but the law is the law and I don’t want to be the first to break it, and of such a serious nature ;)

What is a Bellend? That one is new to me.
Must be a good old northern saying, as we don’t get many down in the deep south.

But I will be checking for Bellends when I see the next driver with them on.

Yes, there are a lot of bellends about. Peugeot 106 and Citroen Saxo drivers seem to be particularly prone. Noticed a stack of them over the weekend. Kudos though to the female Escort GTi driver who, after I'd spent a couple of minutes flashing my rear fog at her, finally realised what "that switch on the dash" does and turned 'em off...

They're a pain in the a*** (well, eyes) if you catch an oncoming car at the wrong angle. They're supposed to point at the ground but it's still possible to dazzle people with them.

Don't take the p*ss. It's a common courtesy issue as much as anything else. Same chapter as leaving your rear fogs on all the time, or driving round with your main beams on...

Oh, there are more than a few down there, can assure you...;)

Whilst I agree that it is usually the little Kevs that drive around with them on I have never been dazzled by front fog lights. Rears - plenty of times.

The people who drive around getting all hot and sweaty about them annoy me far more.

No I don't - mine are driving lights.:p

Spoon 27 August 2003 01:24 PM

Whereas I'd agree it's not a clever thing to drive around in the day with the fog lights on, I'd also like to say how flippin easy they are to accidently knock on.

The button is so close to the ignition barrel when turning the key it's not difficult to accidentally do it.

Not as bad if you have smashed the ignition off and are just touching the wires together.

kentscooby2 27 August 2003 01:33 PM

oh good - the foglight debate re-surfaces!

I don't use them(honest!) - but strikes me that would be much better if Subaru fitted driving lights instead. Front fogs rarely dazzle (unlike rear which are genuinely dangerous when left on) and they do improve visibility of car if travelling quicker than other road users - surely a good thing.

Let's face it - they're only there as a style thing, cos how often are they genuinely useful.

Changed them on my MY97, but haven't thought about doing for MY03 - esp as lights are better anyway.

Pick my sti 8 on monday, and the first thing i'm going to do, is switch on the front fog lights.

so there!

kentscooby2 27 August 2003 01:58 PM

(R6 CDW) whoa - two 03 scoobies and it's only August.
What are you getting for Christmas - therapy?!

PS I'm switching fogs on 03 PPP tonight now I've read this thread.

Ajax 27 August 2003 02:04 PM

So I would get more use out these lights if I turned them into driving lights

What is this just a rewire to the main beam or is it a replacement fitting.

This must be annoying for sti8 drivers as the must have to get out and remove those covers when they want to use them ;)

Sorry could not resist it…………………… :)

Anybody replaced the headlight bulbs in MY03’s with the blue tint ones and does anything comply with the warrantee as far as bulbs are concerned

Ajax 27 August 2003 02:07 PM

greasemonkey:

Thanks for putting me straight :)

greasemonkey 27 August 2003 02:16 PM

 Didn't think STi8's had front fogs? ;)

Ajax - it's not simply a case of wiring into the main beams. Lens assembly is completely different to focus light ahead of the car instead of down & to the side.

kentscooby2 27 August 2003 02:21 PM

Are there decent driving lights available for WRX 03?
Had good Cibie ones from Scoobysport (never could work out when to put on the plastic covers - hehe). Do Subaru do them?
Any recommendations?

Ajax 27 August 2003 02:24 PM

Greasemonkey: wont be bothering with that then, will stick with the fogs

************* Didn't think STi8's had front fogs? **********

Strange really, you pay more money for an STI and they remove the fog lamps.

Must be a marketing ploy, or perhaps it goes faster with the fogs removed as its lighter.

Anyone got any answers about blue headlight bulb replacement please

cosmicchris00 27 August 2003 02:33 PM

I used to drive through Oxfordshire a lot when i worked down sarf. I can honestly say the bell end quotient was far higher than Yorkshire, where I now abide

misty 27 August 2003 02:50 PM

Ajax. Listen to chubby Brown Live, He'll let you know what a BELLEND IS!
dave

Brun 27 August 2003 03:12 PM

Cars which have particularly dazzling front fogs are the Fiat Seicento (sp?) and the Mk 4 Fiesta.
I also agree with the comment about rear fogs in general being very dazzling which is why i have STi rears ;)

kentscooby2 27 August 2003 03:15 PM

lost me there - what's so special about STi rear fogs
or does that mean there aren't any (like the fronts!) - cept of course would be illegal

( R6 CDW ) 27 August 2003 03:22 PM

Greasemonkey! You caught me out! hhmm.

And no therapy, just getting kick out by the wife(lol).

Feck e'm all, lets get a big set of rally lights, and drive with em on all the time.

Ajax 27 August 2003 03:54 PM

kentscooby2:

Sti8 owners have removed the fog covers fitted as standard, only to find invisible fog lamps.

probably to save un - necessary weight and cost.

Strange.

cosmicchris00: it must be something in the water.
misty: I will look up Chubby Brown Live.

Has any body replaced the Headlight bulbs on a MY03, for blue tint ones???????

Brun 27 August 2003 04:00 PM

Illegal???????? Me??????? ;) :D
