I've just got myself an undamaged gear linkage and lever out of a written off P1 . Is this a quick shift or is it just the same as the MY99/MY00? If it is a quick shift would I be better off fitting the whole mechanism or just fitting the P1 lever?

All input much appreciated.

Edited to say my car is an MY00:D

According to my dealer all P1's have a quickshift as standard.

I don't know for sure but I would imagine that provided you've got the entire gearlever assembly, it'll work.

Vindaloo.

I would just fit the lever mate. Thats where the money is! Anyway, its a simple job that way (just a circlip underneath). To do the whole mechanism is a pain.

Thanks guys, I think I might just try the lever first and see what happens and then maybe the whole mechanism.

Hi mikey,
Can you tell me where you got it? I got a P1 box recently but with no lever :(

Mad Scientist 28 August 2003 07:29 PM

I'll tell you a funny story. Did exactly the same as you about 6 months ago. Bought the whole linkage from Grade A. Spent a couple of hours throwing it on (the prop is VERY MUCH in the way). When I had finished it wouldn't go into 1st........ took it off again and discovered the linkage was bent after a front end smash! In the end I just put the lever on my linkage et voila...... short shift heaven.

The linkage is identical! I promise!

How do you get the centre console plastic out. I had a quick look today and took the gearknob off, but the leather gaiter appears to be glued to the centre console.

Does the console just clip on and off ?

How easy is it to get to the circlip ?

Mad Scientist 28 August 2003 08:12 PM

Questions, questions!.......

OK. Centre console bit......in an MY99...lift up arm rest lid for storage box. Pop off the screw covers (round) either side at the front of the box, undo the screws, gently pull surround up and away from handbrake. With this out the way, pull the garlever surround up and out. Can't remember if there are any screws on that.
This will expose the rubber gear gaitor under the panel.
Remove this, to expose the top of the lever. Undo bolt holding lever to linkage and........... jump under the car!

The circlip is (obviously) at the base of the lever, and when you look, its obvious.

Remove this, then......jump in car!

Pull lever out and replace with new then, in the words of Mr Haynes, refitting is a reversal of removal!

Hope thats clear!

cheers pete...sounds easy
just need to order me quickshift now then....

that's the hard bit...deciding which ???

Are you sure the mechanism is exactly the same. I was saving up to buy a genuine Prodrive quickshift, but I might as well go B&M or the likes.
Any have any experiences with both QS ?

kenny.c 29 August 2003 02:24 AM

dpjef-- i now drive a p1..it has the sti q/s as standard.............previously i had a my 97 uk turbo with the
prodrive q/s.....i find that the prodrive q/s throws a little shorter and feels more precise in each shift than my p1.....although the prorive q/s was a tad notchier.

Marcin,

I aquired the P1 quick shift[coff]from a local[coff]scrapyard[coff]. It just happened to fall into my toolbox along with some P1 driving light covers and several dashboard switches:D
