This might be a bit off a stupid Q. Is it possible to get an open deck block converted to a closed deck?

LeoneTurbo 25 August 2003 10:17 PM

Yes, if you have the money you can have it modified to a semi-closed deck block. It's being done in Australia with EJ25 open deck blocks for turbo applications.

I have done this, but for a 2.0 enigne it's not worth it, you can pick up a closed deck block cheaply enough (£300 inc crank out to do it).

What are the closed deck blocks out of?

Pavlo 26 August 2003 12:54 PM

From the factory they came on all Legacy Turbo cars, and uk/wrx turbos upto 1994 (roughly) and then continued on the RA until '96.

Best sure bet is a old Legacy Turbo, but make sure it has it's original engine (coil packs have two bolts instead of the impreza's single one).

Failing that a really early WRX, not sure about UK turbos, seems to be a lottery up to 94, then they mostly have open deck blocks.

They are all phase 1, there isn't a phase 2 closed deck block with the same amount of closing. The nearest thing is a Sti7+ semi closed deck block which has an extra pair of bridges between cylinder/bore and water jacket on each cylinder.

Thanks pavlo. I have a 93 wrx so that means it has a ej20 closed deck block. I have recently picked up a phase 1 ej25 block out of a n/a legacy so i take it thats open deck.

All EJ25 engines are open deck, except for the new STi EJ25 turbo engines for the US they are semi-closed deck.
