Here is a clip of my 5 cute baby pygocentrus nattereri (red bellied piranha) at feeding time. They are about 1.5" and have an isatiable appetite. They will grow to about 6-8" in the first year and will attain up to about 12" fully grown. :D

Uh huh, huh, huh, huh

Cool clip, but where will you put five or six 12 inch fish, only looked like a two foot tank, or am I getting it wrong ?

ajm 24 August 2003 09:19 AM

They are in a 30 US gal. (3foot) tank but will be moved to a 100 US Gal. tank when they are a little bigger. They will start fighting over territory long before they are physically too big for a tank!

Now to start trouble.
What do you feed them on when they get bigger:D:D:D

Alas

Poor Guy 24 August 2003 03:12 PM

sausages?

ajm 24 August 2003 03:35 PM

I can actually hand feed them at the moment which is really cool but that won't be so sensible as soon as their mouths get big enough to do real damage! Don't want them getting the taste!

They are currently on frozen bloodworm, shrimp and Koi pellets which they devour with much enthusiasm. When they get a bit bigger I will introduce beef heart, frozen fish and squid as well. Basically the same stuff but more of it!

Some people use live feeders (goldfish, mice etc.) but I am trying to avoid this cos:

a) its nasty
b) makes right mess in the tank
c) increases agression

Here they are taking floating pellets - they chase them back up to the surface taking bites out of them!

Will tell you in a fortnight when it is finished downloading;)

Anyone got a compressed version ?

ajm 24 August 2003 10:47 PM

yeah its a white ex-mouse/rat/rodent of some sort!

Beer Good 24 August 2003 11:02 PM

Yuk, thanks for that. So glad I got broadband - not!

Interesting what some people choose to use their camcorder for though...

Is that what's meant by 'watching the fur fly' ??!!

ajm 24 August 2003 11:34 PM

its interesting to see their behaviour though... they take a few cautious nips, none of them want to be first.... then as soon as one gets a good bite the frenzy instinct takes over!

Sith 24 August 2003 11:43 PM

Thanks for the info. Wont watch.

PG 24 August 2003 11:49 PM

dont spoil it !!

78 % of the way there now:rolleyes:

GarethE 24 August 2003 11:52 PM

ajm 24 August 2003 11:58 PM

I hope you aren't suggesting I become involved in disposing of a an officer of the law ;)

Well spotted, hadn't noticed the plec. I guess the Oscar gets away with sheer size and the plec keeps a low profile!!!

Fuzz 25 August 2003 12:38 AM

apples24 25 August 2003 11:10 AM

my mate has a few in a tank and it rreally is cool with the goldfish, they swim around for ages as if they havent noticed it then all of a sudden one clocks it, takes a chunk then there all at it, next thing theres just a head floating to the bottom of tank, cruel but incredible to watch

P1Fanatic 25 August 2003 02:43 PM

Sweet. They are well fast movers. Always wanted some of them. They are freshwater arent they?

A surf shop my brother works in down in Cornwall claimed to have the largest one in the UK but it died about 2 years ago.

Simon.
