I have recently ordered an STI 4 type R from japan which should be arriving in a few weeks. I have noticed recently there being a lot of talk regarding people switching to the EVO. Has anyone driven both the type R and earlier evos like 5 & 6 that could give a comparison between them. I am hoping that I haven't made a mistake by ordering an impreza, I am a little worried by the fact everyone keeps talking about how weak the engines and gearboxes are unlike the Evos where people don't seem to have too many problems.

Any coment appreciated

evo 6 tommy mak is most probably the best evo ever made. if you were to tune both cars no type r would ever be able to touch it !!!!

an sti4 should be compared to an evo4 IMO not a 5 or 6:D

the evos still have their problems, more frequent servicing:eek:, clutches, etc, etc

the reason i stated an evo 5 was a sti 4 type r is similarly priced. I just wondered which was the best.

I too thikn that is a bold statement about the evo. I was looking for comparisons of standard cars.

i said evo 6 tommy mak if your keeping it standard then forget it the tommy mak standard has a 0-60 time of 4.6secs and 0-100 11.3

if you don't believe me pick up a copy of evo or car magazine and look in the bak section for the figures

I still drive the Evo - enough said. :D

More regular servicing - to me it was no different as I do sod all miles its just every six months.

My Evo is cheaper (on average) than both my scoobs were to service as well :)

They go quicker (like for like), go round corners faster, stop better (my push bike stops better than a scoob) are rarer & hold thier value better due to the rarity & demand :)

However - if I had to drive it day in day out I would probly have a scoob, they are "softer" than an Evo IMO & can be lived with on a daily basis :)

same power and more weight = faster car ;).

I bet an F1 car is quicker on full tanks that on Qual 1 fuel.

Lets compare the RS Evo against yours shall we to make it fair as they were both built for the same purpose & are the most "comparable" of the two :)

I thought the thread was about type Rs they are under 1250kgs some are under 1200kgs.

'C' exactly a weekend car the EVO an everyday car the scoob thats why went for the STI8 PPP now just saving for the evo 8 !!!! I wish would be nice to have both though

Its all to do with power to weight, tune both a EVO 6 TME to 350bhp and a Type R to 350bhp and the Type R will be quicker simply by weighing over 100kgs less.

As you get newer it gets worse isnt the STI 8 and EVO8 are both well over 1400kgs ?

Yep 70K spent on mods on the car its a great car and a great piece of motoring engineering but I cant afford to chuck that sort of money at a car, can you ?.

its not just weight that makes a car quicker. Dont forget the extremely short ratio gear box the type r has. This will play a big factor in accelleration figures.

Come on guys, he was after an opinion on the lighter type R against a standard evo5.

surely if its lighter with similar power plus a short ratio box geared for acceleration then its going to be quicker. I dont beleive he was after starting an argument between all models of each car.

I would guess that both out of the box the sti4 type r would be quite a bit quicker than a standrd evo5 due to the reasons above although i have no actual figures to back it up.

Maybe someone here will have them too hand.

These cars will be close and the biggest factor will be the nut behind the wheel :D. So it comes down to personal preference at the end of the day and what you want to do to it/with it. Buy any of these cars and they are smiling inducing. What you may find and I am sure the EVO boys will back me up is trying to find an EVO of that vintage as there arent many about and so supply is limited and finding a mint one maybe more difficult.

Drive them both and look around for good specialist and get a few insurnace quotes as you may be shocked.

If you want to mod it an Evo would be a good choice - it has a capable intercooler in the right place, a nice big turbo (despite which it has more low down urge than the Scooby), stronger gearbox and engine, better handling and brakes.

With regards to the more frequent servicing.............it is because of the AYC........you don't need a full service, just the AYC fluid done which is actually achievable yourself.

Naturally if you want a full Mitsi service history then you will have to go through the motions, but I am sure with some talking a compromise can be achieved.

Don't be daunted on the servicing side. :D

I beg to differ with some of the above statements. I have never seen a comparisson between a Type R and an Evo. What i can say though is that a my old STI 6 Type R V-LTD use to knock the spots off the EVO 6's even my best friends Makinnen. Yes the Mitsi has a stronger engine and it reacts better to tuning but to me its just a bring old family 4-door with a big engine. In std form the sound boring. The type r is a propper coupe and it doesnt look like its had a load of Ripspeed spoilers stuck on it lol. Stay with yr scoob mate, you wont regret it. I didnt, thats why i sold it and bought a skyline.

Type R was something like 4.7 to 60?

Evo5 IIRC is 4.6?

Evo6 is about 4.8/4.9 to 60

I havent driven an Evo , so cant comment on the driving experience, however when I was buying my decisions were made simply on the following.

1) Wanted 2 door coupe for looks (also with a scoob it gives more exclusivity and looks more aggressive)
2) Wanted the deep burble of the flat four engine.IMO an Evo cannot match it regardless of exhaust.(No need for ICE)
3) Wanted something that was pretty short ratio'd and handled well, for real back road fun.(Not interested in 100+++mph. Had an old MR2 Turbo that was scary around the corners but was impresive in a straight line , 12.6s 1/4 mile)

Result = I bought a Version 5 Type R.

I agree with C's comments, i.e brakes are indeed shocking on the scoob.
Recent Brembo Group buy allowed a great saving from £1300 down to £750.00 (And you can sell the standard 4 pots on here). So keep a look out in the future

TBH I wasnt too impressed with the Type R when it came across on the boat. Although bog standard it felt weak and slow in comparison to the 340bhp MR2 that it replaced. On the dyno it read around 270bhp but only 230lbft etc which isnt too far off the book figures when considering its running on UK fuel. Needless to say I was mighty dissapointed.

After a downpipe, full system and dual pump water injection system was put on and all mapped to a Unichip the car is completely different.
Now has 310bhp (240-250@wheels) and just over 300lbft .
It now feels like the car I felt it should be as stock.
With fully adjustable suspension and the uprated breaks it is now exactly what I was after.

Not sure where I am going with this , other than to say , you can compare cars all day long, but ultimately you need to simply go for what "you" want for the reasons that "you" have.

Note: A neigbour has recently got an FQ300 in Blue/Grey with cream/grey leather and it looks immense. If I were in the position to buy again with a different budget I would seriously consider the FQ300 as it looks and goes like the business.

Would just need to see if I could live without the flat four burble!!!!!!!

Just looking at a copy of a comparison test beyween bog standard STI 4 Type R and EVO 5.(CAR Magazine May 98).

EVO 5...280BHP. 274 lb/f,1360 Kg weight. 0-60..5.1s

STI 4 Type R 280BHP. 260lb/f, 1250 Kg .0-60...4.8s

Basically says the same as everyone else.

Scoob for all round usage Best to buy.

EVO 5 ultimately quicker car More tiring to live with.


Again it's been said ...Depends what you want .

I am fortunate to own both a Type-R and an Evo 5 (the EVO 5 is my dads!).

Both are excellent cars.

My Type-R due to the close ratio box, feels quicker off the mark and under acceleration virtually anywhere in the range. I think that has a lot to do with the ratios making it feel quicker rather than it actually being quicker much quicker.

The Evo in my opinion feels more refined and would be a nicer car to drive on the m-way once again due to the difference in ratios.

Both the cars attract much unwanted/wanted attention (dependent on what you like)

Both cars go like sh*t off a shovel.

The EVO stops quicker

The impreza sounds better

The DCCD on the impreza can be alot when left open allowing the back end to come into play a lot more

The AYC on the Evo corrects any mistakes.

Type R has two doors, Evo has four doors

Both cost ££££s if they fcuk up

If looked after both will be fine.

At the end of the day there is no right decision or wrong decision - just your decision. If you dont like the Scoob you will be able to sell it for pretty much what you paid for it and then buy an EVO.

Whichever you buy will put a massive smile on your face

Just out of interest what sort of price are people asking for sti 4 type r's these days. I am currently looking around for one at the moment and was wondering if its worth importing one or getting one thats allready here.

anyone bought one recently or have an idea on price, I have seen a couple for around the 12k mark that are allready imported but also "modified" ones for about 10k imported

any ideas
