already used the search. suspect maf is on the way out - very intermittent erratic idle, car seems normal otherwise.

was going to check ecu codes at dinnertime for a 23. two questions:-

- will i actually get a code if the CEL hasnt come on ?
- which connectors am I looking for (MY99). seems to be talk of two black connectors in some threads then talk of a black and a green in others

any help appreciated...

If it's failed, yes it will show but you should get a CEL.

If it's failing then no. Only way to check is to replace it. Personally I'd try and get the Dealer to check with a new one before (potentially) wasting £70.

To check the ECU codes connect the two black connectors. You can get instructions here

The green connectors come into play when you want to reset the ECU. Like so

Riftzone,

from what i remember you WILL still get an error code up when you do a check, even if the cel has not been on.

There are 4 connectors - 2 green to join together
and - 2 black to join together

there's some more help here :

ecu reset info.

ecu help

Riftzone
If the cel light has not come on i don't think you will find any error code stored for the MAF. I have a MY99 and had the same problems as you describe, no error codes stored, also the ecu manages to learn round the failing MAF, which can be dangerous lean running at WOT, changed mine and all came good. The connectors are under the dash taped to the steering column, try a search for ecu re-set, it will give you the correct proceedure for the re-set, which you will have to perfom after you replace the MAF.
Hope this helps.

cheers guys, found the black connectors, no code stored.

i wouldnt mind if it did the dodgy idle thang all the time but its 1 in 3 days or so... intermittent enough not to be able to test it with a different maf.

may have to bite the bullet and just buy one...

I have the same problem (see drive train forum). Will probably be buying a new MAF soon. Will Let you know how I get on.

andy, maf replaced. seems to have done the trick. dont be fooled by the new maf having only 4 pins rather than 5 - it works a treat.

when drivin along yesterday, was dippin the clutch and watchin the revs drop quite quickly to around 200 then jump back up to 800. with the new maf, the same test shows it dropping to around 1k then very slowly settling back to 800rpm.

Great, good to hear you have sorted it! Will hopefully get mine done in next few days
