As of next Saturday my beloved MY01 WRX PPP will be gone and replaced by a Black EVO 8 FQ300. I test drove a STi 8 (non PPP mind!) and so much wanted to like it, but with the lack of umph and that hideous scope I decided to try an EVO. Well the acceleration of the thing was amazing, the felling was like the 1st time I drove my, then new, MY97 Uk turbo. After all I went from a Clio 16v (137bhp) to a classic scoob, and I loved that car. After 2 scoobs its time for a change anyway and I may well be back in a couple of years you never know. I love this forum so I hope you don't give me a hard time for no longer being a scoob owner.

Turbo wrx. Six weeks down the line you'll wonder where that acceleration went to. Like any new motor it's just a phase.
dave.

Jza 18 August 2003 12:51 PM

Congrats m8!

Some great facts about your new car:

a) It does 0-60 in the time advertised - not what the manufacturer/prodrive claim it will do "without heat soak".

b) It hasn't cost you £5k in depreciation the minute you sat in it.

c) It's not a brand that has been completely decimated by the manufacturer in the past 3 years.

d) It will eat STI PPP's!

How great is it? Where did you get it from?

...and talk to me about trading in your WRX - ive got a MY01 PPP and am looking to do the same ;)

I'm looking to make the step asap!

This Jza person speaks a lot of sense :D

Matt Churchill 18 August 2003 03:37 PM

turbo, just done the exact same thing, my well modded UK car has gone for a yellow FQ300 (with yellow leather interior!), pick it up tomorrow night :D:D:D

Watch out for the pics in a day or so

Thinking the same way myself....may wait a bit to see what the "9" has to offer.

richs2891 18 August 2003 06:09 PM

Nice choice of car and in a sensible colour as well.
I personally thinks it good to try cars from other manufactors.
Personally thinks there is no thing as the perfect car, hence why I keep changing them - well thats the excuse to 'ere indoors !

Cool nice 1!

APJ 18 August 2003 11:25 PM

Im toying with converting too - just really waiting to see what the MY04 has to offer. Much of a wait on the Mitsis?

Matt Churchill 19 August 2003 07:15 AM

Not much wait, around 6 weeks I was told for a new one.

Davestamf 19 August 2003 08:17 AM

The EVO's a nice car alright. However, before getting too carried away with the anti-Subaru theme in these replies, consider as I did, that you will have to part with £31,500 for an FQ300 against less than £20,000 for a new WRX. Not exactly comparing like-for-like are we.

GaryScoobNCBR 19 August 2003 08:51 AM

well said dave..with the extra 10 grand the scoob could be made to piss all over the evo...

still happy motoring :D

ARRON BIRD 19 August 2003 09:03 AM

Hmm nice car.
Have you considered the cost for those little interim services
I`d have one tomorrow but do 20000 a year and you can imagine how much extra that would cost me right!!!!!

RESSE 19 August 2003 10:02 AM

I did the same thing a few weeks ago and chopped in my 1997 UK Turbo for a 2000 W Evo 6 GSR.

After two weeks I had to replace the clutch (NOT covered by warranty) and now the active yaw control clutch plate has failed.

Dealer inform me there is a three week wait on the parts - and they cost approx £2,000 (is this true)? - Fortunately this is covered by warranty.

Not impressed by Evo compared to my old battered Scoob.

scrappy_doo 19 August 2003 10:05 AM

I have turned to the darkside aswell loved my WRX Jap import but just really wanted an EVO 5.
To compare the two:-
The EVO 5 is quicker.....but smoother than my scooby was, much more drivable, better interior, holds value more, quieter on the motorways, turns more heads as its less common than the impreza. Bad points much more expensive to insure, to service/maintain.
Scooby, very loud with HKS exs and K&N, cheaper to insure and to pick up, servicing is cheap, supposed to be better on fuel although I ahvn't notice they both are bad but thats not why you buy cars like this ;).Bad points due to the price reduction some real idiots can purchase a WRX and are starting to give the impreza drivers a bad name.
I love both cars to be honest, but I do think overall the EVO is a better car IMO.

Jza 19 August 2003 10:33 AM

How much are the services then?

Jza

scrappy_doo 19 August 2003 11:06 AM

Well its just the frequency really mate, you have to service and EVO every 4,500 miles that inlcudes changing the AYCF(Active Yaw Control Fluid) and std oil and filter change.

ScoobyKev 20 August 2003 11:04 AM

I nearly turned to the dark side yesterday as my local dealer offered me £xxxxx for my P1. Thought about it and just couldn't part with it...I love my P1. I only do 3,000 miles a year so it wouldn't be an issue, its the AYC that sh!ts me up on the EVO. If anything goes wrong with that then your talking loads of money.

Regards

Kev

Extremist 20 August 2003 11:29 AM

Evo's are the daddy ! If u r worried about the Ayc just get an Rs not Gsr - No Ayc and a lot stronger diff to cope with much more horsepower !

*TopCat* 20 August 2003 11:49 AM

Yup I did the same fq300 E8 in July after owning a scoob for 2.5yrs boy it was fun, but needed a change and so far a great one!

:)

APJ 21 August 2003 11:27 PM

that you will have to part with £31,500 for an FQ300 against less than £20,000 for a new WRX
Erm - not so. FQ300 list is £29k for 300bhp. Comprable car would be an STi with PPP - £27k. For only £2k more you are getting a more exclusive car. However, the short service interval is a pain.

TonyBurns 22 August 2003 12:38 AM

28k will actually get you 1300kg and 322bhp (look on www.litimports.co.uk and read about spec c v gt3 ;))
Quicker than an fq300, lighter than an fq300 and handles just as good if not better than an fq300 ;):D (oh and its cheaper too! ;))

Tony:D

scrappy_doo 22 August 2003 12:43 PM

Yeah but you can pay £400 a year to any mitsubishi dealer for a warranty so you never have to worry about AYC ;) also included free breakdown cover :)
IMO scoobys are good, EVOs are better.

Diablo007 22 August 2003 02:03 PM

I had to go through a similar decision a couple of weeks ago.

Used to have a Turbo 2000 and have had my eye on getting an EVO for ages so finally found one I liked. EVO 6 GSR. Dealer let me have it for the weekend.

Must admit the first time I flawed it all I could say to myself was sold, sold sold !!! The problem was after you get over that you realise it’s a pretty cheap looking interior and the build quality isn't great. I suppose I shouldn't expect fantastic build qualities in a Jap car but anyway. But the main downside and I don't know how this has changed with the 7 and 8 but the ride is incredibly hard! When you stop going crazy speeds everywhere and just want to drive from A to B it can annoy the crap out of you. Found it can actually make passengers feel ill!

Anyway walked away in the end. Bought myself a STi 7 Japanese imported version. just as fast but a lot nicer all round.

Still would like to try an EVO 8 FQ though !
