Easy one I hope.

Any idea of the fastest speed one could reasonably expect from a production car in 1898 might have been?

I've got involved in a pseudo political newspaper debate with some anti-motorist crowd who are dragging up all this crap about "violence through vehicle speed" and are citing cases from as long ago as 1896 when the first pedestrian fatality occurred.

In case you're interested it was in Crystal Palace when a woman stepped off the pavement and was fatally injured by a car doing the outrageous speed of 4mph. Clearly speed kills...

Thanks for your help,

SB

No idea, but an interesting statistic for Government policy.

80% of accidents involving pedestrians, were due to the pedestrian walking into the road.

The government spend millions advertising things like "Speed Kills" and "Think" campaigns, but when was the last time you saw a "Dont walk into the road without looking" campaingn?

Was it "Charlie says....." that must be from the 70's

oh and "The Green Cross Code" pffft

Boro,

The scary thing is that in Thames Valley, home of the "Safety Camera" the number one cause of adult road deaths is...

... drunks sitting down in the road for a rest.

The driver gets prosecuted as a matter of course, regardless of how stupid it is, the statistics get skewed even further and the only beneficiary is the Darwinian theory of evolution...

Pi$$es me right off, I can tell you :(

Dazza01 17 August 2003 11:53 PM

probably about 5mph i reckon, or there about's

LOL:D Back then they had to have a man walk in front of the vehicle with a red flag :D I suspect that there were few 'speed related' deaths in 1898.

I'm sure that the PC brigade would like to reintroduce this policy, if they had the chance.

:thinks: they could appoint economic migrants as flag runners then we could run the buggers over ;):D

UB:D
