if a muppet mate of yours wants a shot of your scoob?
I have a mate who is a good person and a car mechanic by profession. But he is a bit of a bombhead. He crashed his own pug coz he was pissed etc.he had a ride in my scoob today. My boyfriend drove it.But he is coming tomorrow and says he would like to drive my scoob just to see what it's like.He will be completely sober I know and he is fully comp on his own battered pug.He must be a good driver but what shall you do in this circumstance?I mean,he will only be 3rd party!
Now am I being too paranoid or should I not let him drive it?I will feel quite impolite so,tell me what should I do?http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/huhh.gif

I let my mate drive mine but iv'e known him 20+ years and trust him completely other than him and my wife i wouldn't let anyone else near it especially if they have a record of trashing their own cars.If he ploughs it into a tree can he pay you the cash to repair or replace it not sure i could lay my hands on 13k just like that.

Personally nobody drives my car unless I know they are insured Fully Comp on my car, and I have 100% trust in them.

I dont want to be left with a repair bill for possibly thousands all because someone only had TP cover on my car.

Turbohot 17 August 2003 12:35 AM

You know when people persist,it is so bl**dy embarrassing!
DO you think I should be straight with him(god,it will be difficult)or shall I make an excuse? If yes, what excuse?
(sorry to bother but feel I need an advice)

Turbohot 17 August 2003 12:39 AM

Very straight comment by IanW.Nice one!Sorts my head out a bit!

*Sonic* 17 August 2003 12:40 AM

No excuse needed its your pride and joy

If he wants to 'test drive' one, suggest he goes to a local dealer, and test drive one of theirs

There are only three people I have let drive my car, my Bro & Bro in Law, whom I fully trust

and Michelle (Little Miss WRX), whom I also fully trusted to drive us back from Santa Pod

From my own, personal, twisted pov, it's a case of deciding which is harder to say:

"Sorry, but not in my car,"

... or...

"You owe me £13k, and you owe the woman with a broken back £xxxxx".

Being a cynical, half-Welsh, half-Northern, half-student kinda guy, I think I'd prefer to say the former.

Not all fully comp policies cover you to drive third party cars with third party cover either.

I'm sure that Tesco don't insure their FC customers to drive other cars on a third party cover basis....

Just a thought, and maybe a get out of jail card for you in the excuses department. And besides, like someone has already said, the question is can this person afford to put the car right if the worst happened???

Very few people have driven my car... Relatives, or very close friends...

Much better to be impolite than the owner of a knackered car. Even if he doesn't crash it, what would you do if he managed to fritz the gearbox or clutch?

As has been mentioned above, if he wants a test drive, suggest he contact a Subaru dealer...;)

Turbohot 17 August 2003 01:32 AM

Ummmm..........the more I hear from you all,the stronger I feel to take pride in my "pride & joy".I mean,I even object on my BF not cooling the car down enough after a long run (if ever he forgets). So no chance for him for driving my scoob! Thanks for your suggestions, mates!
Cheers!

Dont care if he got bloody pilots licence for F14 , Dont let him drive it in my opinion

fatherpierre 17 August 2003 07:19 AM

You shouln't even have to ask!

No way.

Leslie 17 August 2003 09:47 AM

Its all good advice. Only one guy has driven my car and I can trust him with my life. He's got one too and he always thinks of others before himself.

Too many things can go wrong, the engine could fail seriously and someone else might hit him but get away with the insurance claim due to lies. Much safer to refuse politely.

Les :)

Even fully comp doesn't automatically cover you to drive other vehicles.Letting him drive it without proper cover IIRC leaves you open to prosecution too.
Either way, tell him firmly but politely no.

pugoetru 17 August 2003 10:38 AM

no no no no no no no no no no no no no :D

Alas 17 August 2003 10:51 AM

My insurance (with Liv Vic) covers me to drive with 3rd Party only insurance on any car as long as I am not the owner of the car, and that the owner has fully comp insurance on the vehicle

Handy for sharing the driving back from beer runs in france :)

but not if you wrap a mates scoob around a tree etc etc

Turbohot 17 August 2003 10:57 AM

Yes! Deffo NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk.../headshake.gif

Treacle 17 August 2003 10:58 AM

Why not take him out for a spin with you driving, that way he can experiance all the fun without giving you any need to worry.

WagonRich 17 August 2003 11:24 AM

I don't let *anyone* drive my scoob....I even cringe when it's in for the MOT and they're moving it about the garage.....
