Had a survey from my local council regarding the service provided by the cleansing team in our area. After the initial bunch of Q's about street cleaning, bin emptying etc I was asked of what ethnic origin I was. The same question was asked when I filled in a form for my union. It was the same with the census recently. There were more questions about race, colour etc than anything else.

Why are these people so obsessed with what colour people are. After all we are constantly told that we must all live happily together as one .

Maybe they are all taking the government line that if your in a minority group ie gay, black, single parent etc then they seem to feel that they have to bend over backwards to give them more help than others.

Pi$$ em off by comparing your skin to a colour chart for Dulux paint, and give them that colour!

I'm currently a shade of Natural Saffron :D

Wurzel 14 August 2003 01:00 PM

So Chip what colour are you anyway :D:D:D

magepaster 14 August 2003 01:36 PM

When asked my ethnic origin I always write below "None of the above" leave `em guessing

unclebuck 14 August 2003 01:37 PM

I personally think its usual bureaucratic, statistical bo))ox.

If they wiped the collection and analysis of this off of Government forms, it would probably save us all a couple of tax points; but then again they'd transfer it to something else.

DAC 14 August 2003 02:02 PM

advert in my local paper last night :-

various 1 year on job training (secretarial/media etc.) £1000/month tax and NI free

must be from minority ethnic background
WTF WTF WTF

it infuriates me - I dont earn that after tax, NI etc -

this country is absolute b0llcks - reverse discrimination by politcally spineless jerks

rant over

Chip 14 August 2003 02:05 PM

Wurzel,
I'm brown.....

Cos Ive just come back from Spain.

Chip.

Scooby96 14 August 2003 02:21 PM

Agree with DAC & Chip - what if there was an advert that stated, "must NOT be from a minority ethnic background"

Dracoro 14 August 2003 03:39 PM

Jason, From what I can see DAC cannot apply to that job because of the colour of his skin.

I'd like to know what the job is that restrict applicants in this way.

Chip 14 August 2003 04:29 PM

Its probably a job with a local authority or the police, fire service etc.

Doesnt seem to matter to these people who is best for the job so long as theyre from a minority. They are even told they must employ a certain %age of minority people. I would rather have the best people for the job myself no matter what color, sex etc they may be.

Worst of the bunch is the Labour party when choosing candidates for election.

This whole country has gone fcukin nuts.

Chip.

Gordo 14 August 2003 05:06 PM

unbelievable - they'll be employing women next!

boxst 14 August 2003 05:11 PM

Hello

Local authorities like to produce statistics that say they employ x% of certain races / minorities.

Ideally you should be a one legged, black, diseased lesbian. Well, that appeared to be the case in Islington anyway...

Steve.

Chip 14 August 2003 05:18 PM

Boxst,
Surely that cant be true in this day and age.

Chip.

Chip 14 August 2003 05:19 PM

Jason,
Why the taxation bit? Lost me there I'm afraid.

Chip.

starstruck 14 August 2003 05:29 PM

"We welcome applications from minority groups".
This is appended to all advertisements from Cardiff County Council. WHY ????
Are they saying that non minority groups are not able to carry out the role as well as minority groups ???
If not then they are encouraging applications from inferior candidates. The centrally funded organisations love to be able to preach that they have "Encouraged and promoted a multi racial workforce". This may be the case, but it doesn't mean that rate payers are getting the best people, just the prescribed ethnic mixture.

Chip 14 August 2003 05:37 PM

Sorry wasnt thinking obviously.

Been reading about the Ethnic Minority Liberal Democrats and their policies which are:

Targeted efforts to recruit black and ethnic minority people.
( I take it then the blacks are not in a minority group any more in the UK)

Provide developement and experience for members seeking approval as PPCs or local candidates

Identify key issues affecting ethnic minorities.

Making use of translated material

Getting involved in minority communities.

Pity they didnt have same feelings about the rest of the community which are by far in the majority.

If I wanted advice about my career I would ask for it, and I didn't.
So sorry to question Governmental Policy.
I am well aware of the recruitment policy r.e. minorities.
My point is that discrimination of any sort, including Positive discrimination, potentially leads to the better candidates being excluded because they are not from the required minority.

unclebuck 14 August 2003 06:03 PM

It implies to me that applications from non minority groups will not be welcome.

Leslie 15 August 2003 12:54 PM

It just should not be even mentioned. Whatever they say in that respect is racist anyway.
