I am trying to link my desktop to my laptop to swap/transfer files. I have got an RJ45 crossover cable and have linked them together.
Both PC's know that the other one is there, as in "Network Connections" the relevant icons have timers running. Also when I reboot either of the PC's, the other will show it being disconnected and then reconnected as it reboots.

Basically, I have some sort of connection but am at a loss as to where to go from here.

How do I get them to talk to each other and swap files?

Have done a search in the XP help section. It mentions a "hub".

I want to do this too and was given a pull-out from a PC mag that details the set up while using that kind of cable.
I have, however left it in my locker at work but I will try and remember to bring it home and scan it .......wont be for 3 more days though

Do you have file and printer sharing installed and enabled?

No I haven't. I wasn't aware that I would need any.

I thought that two PC's using the same OS would connect and share easily. Obviously not. Can you recommend any software?

It is part of the operating system but isn't always installed automatically.
Go into network setup
Add protocol
Select 'File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks'

The process is slightly different on different OS, but check help for 'installing file and printer sharing' or 'installing a network service'

If you want to move files in both directions install it on both PC's

Now right click any file, folder, disk or printer you want to share and tick the appropriate boxes.

You should now be able to browse to the other PC through network places.
When it is running on both PC

Just noticed you have XP

Open Network Connections. (To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.)
Click Local Area Connection.
On the File menu, click Properties.
On the General tab, click Install.
In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, click Service, and then click Add.
In the Select Network Service dialog box, click File and Printer Sharing, and then click OK.

you could try deleting your network card from device manager and letting it reinstall with defaults.

No joy, I'm afraid. As soon as I click on OK, the whole setup goes into "Not Responding" in the system manager.
