Oh what fun :D
I would recommend that everyone had this bit of kit on their car, i dont normally rag my car to the red line but i got both caution lights on near the red line  (no red though, flickering second orange) so backed off.
Everyone who has a full decat should have one of these me thinks ;)
A BIG thanks to Pete at Pro-Sport for fitting this for me :D

tony - IMHO if u are redlining the car in 1st and second then what you might be hearing is just engine noise/transmission noise. does the knocklink light up quickly as you redline it only to go back to normal when you change gear. if so then i think you have no worries.

Now if in 4th and 5th the lights start to come on mid range(sometimes 4500-5500 rpm) then you have probs.

cheers

No this wasnt in the mid range (get a very small flicker of green at full boost) this though is at 6600 rpm plus (which i dont use alot) also it was very warm out (4th gear btw) nothing except green below this.

Tony, where are Pro-Sport based, and do they have any knock links left in stock??

cheers :)

Leviathan 10 August 2003 09:35 PM

Tone, have you got it on max sensitivity? just out of interest!

GREEN SCOOBY 11 August 2003 12:55 PM

how much was it as well tony?

wah 11 August 2003 01:05 PM

Tony was that you sat in the office at around 13:00 yesterday, I called in, in a red MY93 WRX

JamieMacdonald 11 August 2003 04:28 PM

6600rpm in 4th?

That's going some - private airfield of course? ;)

I've got mine on max sensitivity - never get more than the two greens, apart from when I bounced off the limiter and got a more colourful display.

SiPie 11 August 2003 04:50 PM

Same as Jamie after I removed the Dawes...

Prior to that the odd flash of red

JamieMacdonald 12 August 2003 07:47 PM

What was your Dawes set at Si?

Maybe I need to turn mine up a bit! :D

The way I provoke them to see if they det (off a rolling road) is to run the car at full throttle in 3rd gear and stop the car accelerating by holding it on the brakes. You can then test each 400 RPM zone and be absolutely brutal to your brakes and engine, but you should then know it won't det ;) You can then simulate with a bit more safety the top speed run that everyone says they never do

Top speed runs are absolutely brutal on the engine, especially with a TMIC. Hence why Subaru limit it I think - the TMIC is best at short bursts to heatsink/soak, a continuous speed on full load makes them go pop with a relatively mild tune that you could easily get away with otherwise.

Gedi 12 August 2003 08:20 PM

My knocklink never seems to go above the bottom light....even when I run with no octaine booster on a hot day. Its an STI5 and the sensitivity is set at max.....

.....strange

ozzy 12 August 2003 08:26 PM

Just to add, I usually run Optimax (no OB), but on Sunday I had to fill the car up with ESSO SUL in Fort William. There was definetely more activity with that fuel, but just the first LED with an occasional blip to the 2nd green over the bumps.

I think fuel quality has been more of an issue with my car than the hot weather.

I think it's always worth checking it now and again by tapping the block with a brummie spanner.

Mine appeared to stop working just after I fitted it, *I think* it was because I turned the sensitivity pot round too far (towards max) and had to back it off a tiny bit.

Anything above the factory speed limiter is potentially dodgy, so about 140-145 mph for a 99/00 UK - it is a progressive speed limiter. I would stick below 130 mph for anything but short blats on a standard car.

ozzy 12 August 2003 08:33 PM

I've never been that brave yet ;) an indicate 140mph once, but always a good bit below that.

Sorry for the delay in replying :(
Ok, RichiW, Pro Sport is in Stockport, Manchester, their number is 0161 432 9999, Pete was expecting a delivery and it was in customs so he should have one or two Knocklinks/Lambalinks in stock now :D

Leviathan, Im not sure how sensitive its set at but..... even ragging the car today (3rd gear) i only got 2 green lights up, id have to ask Pete what he set it at but probably more sensitive than not so sensitive ;)

Wah, Yup if that was your red scoob with the gold alloys then it was me in the office ;)

JB, Deffo a good bit of kit ;) i should have got one earlier ;):D

Gedi, im quite amazed that your car is only just hitting the first green on max sensitivity, for a JDM car that seems very unusual

TonyBurns 14 August 2003 09:41 PM

Oooops, Sorry Green Scooby, missed you there :(
I got the knock link from Jap Innovations as i was using the scoob this week and couldnt wait to get one fitted (these things sell quicker than engines blowing in this weather and thats saying something  ) the cost was just under 89 quid, an additional 161p for a connector to put the wires on to though.

I should state that when i had both the orange lights id had 1/2 a tank of fuel in, probably the same fuel that did John F's car in as i use the same garage (had it in a couple of weeks) but i had ob in that.

cheers Tony:cool:

RichiW 15 August 2003 07:38 AM

Thanks Tony, i'll give them a bell

ozzy 08 December 2003 08:21 PM

What would you say is a bad continuous high-speed run? I'll admit to doing a few, but they've never lasted more than a couple of miles and I'm always slightly nervous backing off the throttle.

I've personally had a few red spikes near the limiter, but other than that it just been the first (or at most) the 2nd green LED.

I did notice coming back down from Fort William on Sunday that the first LED would flash occasionally even with a steady 80mph straight road. It did seems to blip over any bumps in the road, which was strange to see.
