Had a couple of Classics, which would do consistently 5.5 Miles per litre (mpl) [=25mpg] almost regardless of the weight of my boot and my enthusiasm.

Bought the STi7 and got wildly varying economy....anything from 4.65 to 5.25, and this lasted for about a year. Fitted PPP, and the consumption started to settle around 4.9 - 5.0 after uprating the fuel pump. And all of a sudden it's gone up to 5.25 consistently over a period of a couple of months.

Puzzled as to why it should have been so variable, and why it suddenly settled. After all, the ECU should have learnt in under 15 months! "loosening up", perhaps....but again, the improvement came at - say 12,500 miles!

Any thoughts, anyone??

Phil
(Optimax, but 95+booster if unable to get to Shell. 95+booster seems to be a shade the more economical!)

Probably due to hoter weather as the ECU adds more and more fuel for cooling? Just my 2p...

Proabably not, Theo, as the new higher consistent economy has been with me for a couple of months, during which time the weather hasn't been always hot.....

Thanks, tho...

Just a thought - check all your hoses make sure that there are no cracks etc that are allowing air into the system - making your mixture leaner!

Phil my car MY01 was getting good mileage returns over a period of time and then my MAF was diagnosed as being faulty (Running lean)

Just a thought but get it checked.

Hmmmm.... not often that what looks like good news could just possibly be bad!!! I'll get it checked. Watch this space if you're interested!

Agree with post above and it sounds more likely that your car is running lean

MAF or Lambda probably...

Would get it checked out very soon indeed especially with current hot weather = potential boom

Hope not..but better to be safe

To test for the MAF, i.e. to see if the car is running lean, the car will have to be taken out for a blast at full throttle in say 3rd gear from around 2000 to 7000rpm, with a select monitor from Subaru or Ecutek's Delta Dash diagnostic software. The O2 sensor readings must be observed. If your dealer just plugs in the select monitor on idle and checks for a fault code it will not show up. Make sure it gets taken out for a run. Insist to the dealer that the car gets taken out for a run.

It does sound as if the car is starting to run lean.

Cheers,

George.
