had a uk300 now for a month, and i keep picking up stone chips on the bonnet. anyone got any advice on anything i can do to minimize the damage?

DJ140 27 July 2003 06:36 PM

Leave a big gap between you and the car in front.

The paint on Subaru's is crap and the only way to stop the chips is to not drive to close. The MY03 seems better than the old classic for chips, it's inevitable you'll get a few, but it is possible to keep the number of them down.

When the wife's driving you can read the chassis number of the car she's following, plenty of stone chips for her!

The paintwork on the MY01/2 models is crap. I have several serious dings on my bonnet that have chipped the paint and actually dented the alu bonnet
The only thing softer than Subaru paint is this governments policy on crime.

I have an MY02 WRX and I have picked up inumerable stone chips.
I've even got a couple on the roof! I'm not sure what the answer is but I do sympathise. To be honest the bloody stonechipping has taken a little of the shine off(pardon the pun)owning the car.

I have a MY02 WRX every time i wash it i find more stone chips& it totally p1sses me off.Don't think you can do anything to stop it though other than only drive between 2 & 5 in the morning when there are no other cars on the road!

The 03 is worse than the classic shape. I have had my Sti8 for 5 months and it is by far the worst for paint I've had (I have had 4 Turbos).

You can have them armourfended for about £600.

I am actually going to write to IM and suggest that there is a paint fault with my car as I don't think this is acceptable after only 5 months.

I haven't even been driving partcularly close to other cars either

Steve777 28 July 2003 12:56 PM

PS We should all write and complain to IM otherwise nothing will get done.

I let you know what the reply is when I get it

wideboyuk 28 January 2004 11:26 AM

Did u get a reply??
The chips on my STI7 are becoming horrendous for a 1 year old car!

Steve777 28 January 2004 12:47 PM

No didn't write in the end, but I don't seem to be getting them now, but I haven't driven the car much recently anyway

"MADDOG" 28 January 2004 03:49 PM

Guy's I also cannot beleive the poor paintwork on my STi8, I actualy I dread washing my car just incase I find more stone chips. At this rate I can see me spraying the front end of my car before the end of the year !!!!!!

coolhandluke,
Welcome to UK300 ownership, I hope you enjoy it (apart the stone chips). What number is yours? any mods?

Is it possible to get one of those "bibs" that they put on cars in cold climates?

If you've ever been on a skiing trip you'll know what I mean. Looks like a rubber apron over the front of the car to protect against road grit.

Pbr 28 January 2004 05:29 PM

Yeah you can get those "bibs" that fit over the front of the bonnet, but I think Folia-Tec do a transparent film that can be fitted over the bumper and bonnet that looks neater.

:)

Pbr 28 January 2004 05:32 PM

And stone chips will still happen regardless of how close you are to the car in front: wagons coming past you the other way throw up a lot of grit as well, and what about cars that overtake you and cut in front of you too close?
