Okay, getting a little tired of Outlook's intermittent connection errors, it's slow mail download speed, and its inability to guarantee that every email will have every filter rule applied to it correctly.

So, what other (free) email clients are there out there worth trying? Who uses a non-MS client, and what do you think of it? I've tried Pocomail, Bloomba, Outlook Express, and didn't get on with any of them. I'm going to take a look at Pegasus, and see what that's like these days - it wasn't up to much last time I looked though.

Any suggestions gratefully received. :D

eudora?

MarkO 21 July 2003 10:14 AM

Had a look at Eudora yesterday. Not convinced about the adware thing, though....

I've been using Pegasus for many years now. No complaints from me (it even warns you about stuff like 'Lazy HTML').

Outlook 2003 is apparently much better. I was with Microsoft last week and there's loads of improvements particularly if you have remote workers. There's a caching mode that enables either just the headers to download or you can do a trickle download in the background. Finally they've stopped it crashing out if you remove the network cable by accident.

I've been running Outlook 2003 for several months. It's the problems with this version that have annoyed me to the point of considering switching email clients.

Incredimail ?

MarkO 21 July 2003 01:49 PM

Thanks Gavin, but it doesn't really seem to be a proper email client, just a bunch of zany graphic effects. Any email client which lists as one of its primary features: 'Old typewriter typing sounds' can't really be taken seriously, IMO.

Mark - what probs have you seen? I'm in the middle of planning a 40,000 user rollout based on EX2003 and Outlook 2003.

I'm using Outlook 11 Beta 2, and on the whole it's been very good. I've just had a few timeouts when collecting mail from my pop accounts, but that's probably only an issue on dial-up. The other problem is when recieving mail from several accounts, with 10-15 rules set up, every so often some of the emails don't get processed through all of the rules, meaning that sometimes I see spam when it should automatically be binned, etc.

Most of these probably aren't an issue on a network, so I wouldn't worry. And I've no idea how much the full (non-beta) version improves on things.

towzer 21 July 2003 06:20 PM

have you tried caching mode?

MarkO 22 July 2003 07:29 AM

Can't use caching mode, 'cos I'm using Outlook from home on a dial-up connection. Caching mode is only available if you're connecting to an Exchange server....

AnytimeNow

MarkO 24 July 2003 08:23 AM

From the look of their site, AnytimeNow is just a ponced-up webmail interface. I've already got webmail with my ISP, but I'm looking for a proper email client....
