hey guys, just looking on warrender.co.uk, where there was some info about the 22b, and it said that the 22b name is widely accepted to be derived from the hexidecimal (base 16) representation for the number 555.
viz:- 2x16x16 = 512 + 2x16 = 32 + bx1 =11 =555 u learn sumat new everyday! Andy J |
Originally thought to be 2.2 wideBodied version as well

sad very sad :D

Even if it wasn't deliberate then it's an amazing coincidence. Whats the chance of it happening by mistake? About 1 in 555 I guess....
|
the name comes from the 2.2 boxer = 22b
simple as |
It is hexidecimal to represent the company's sponsor in the WRC
555 cigarettes!! |
I guess we mortals will never know the true reason of the name :)
I like the 555 story but I realy do think its just coincidence, I think its more likly to be the 2.2 Boxer thing or is it just a coincidence that the 22B had a 2.2 Boxer engine ??? Andy |
i'll agree with the 2.2 boxer thingy:D:D
gav.. |
Could the reason be that the engineers/designers worked out what 555 was in hex and then designed an engine to match? What sort of car would have been produced if the sponsors were Mille Miglia??
;-) |
Why was the 2001 WRC called the 44S then????
|
Now... I've always kind of liked the idea that it's 555 in hex.. but.. the 2.2 Boxer also sounds plausible.
I've just spoken to George Donaldson from SWRT and his feeling is that they're just code numbers of no significance "but you never know whether the guy who's doing it plays little games" :D :D He's going to talk to Japan whilst at Rally Germany and come back to us with a definitive answer. :) All the best Simon |
2.2L Bored, Boxer or most probably Bilstein suspension for 22B facts google "22B"
|
No idea sounds like a paint code to me!
|
I heard they were going to use binary but decided that the Subaru 1101101010010101001010101101010101 would never sell
|
I'm all for the inane design/prototype/development project code number theory.
You know 22a 22b 22c etc the 22b mule was the best one and used for production values and measurements and the car was never given another name. What about : S202 UK300 (I'm hoping that one ain't that obvious  ) P1 Just my thoughts ;) Mikey  |
I'm sure Pete Croney has a write up on the 22B on the 22b.com site and he says it is the hexidecimal reason.
From what I gather, Pete is never wrong when it comes to Scooby questions, so I go for that explanation :) |
LOL @ Jasey :D
|
is there no explanation on the actual subaru site either jap or uk?
darren |
uk 3oo is easy
they made 300 cars and sold them in the uk i think it was to celebrate the win in the rally of GB/uk |
Nice one Jasey
:) |
Lol @ Scoobydevil. The UK300 was a celebration of the fact that the bugeyes weren't selling ;)
|
Or was it 299 as they tend to miss the 13 out in special editions like the Terzo and RB5
AllanB |
does the 22b not mean both explanations? the hexidecimal 555 and a 2.2 boxer engine? sounds good in both cases to me.was it not meant to be like that, i always thought so.
|
OK
Latest update... I have from a credible source... that the 22 is almost 100% definitely derived from the 2.2 engine (although he will check for sure) and that there are many theories on the B, including the Billie suspension / Boxer engine, A version, B version, etc More to follow |
OK
Definitive answer, from George Donaldson, who has spoken to the people who named it.. get ready, as it's a bit of a dissapointment... 2.2 engine a = normally aspirated b = turbo charged at the time, A and B were for the two types of engine. All the best Simon |
There's no mystery left now....:(
|
Lol @ Scoobydevil. The UK300 was a celebration of the fact that the bugeyes weren't selling |
The question everyone is afraid to ask:-
Who is George Donaldson? SHOOT ME! SHOOT ME! |
I think it was to celebrate the win in the rally of GB/uk |
George is Sporting Manager for SWRT
