Hi everyone,
My MY98 seems to have developed an annoying (and quite loud) rattle that sounds quite like a shopping trolley where the castors aren't level! It mainly occurs on overrun and seems to be coming from around the turbo area, I know that on mid 90s impreza's the heat shields often cracked, is this what it probably is?
If it is, is it easy/cheap to replace/repair? (I seem to remember people on IWOC mentioning welding it back together)

It could be the actuator rod rattling where it hinges with the wastegate, that occured on mine. Try holding the rod (only when the engine's cold! :eek: ) where it disappears into the turbo heatshield and revving the engine. It could be the bearings in the turbo, try putting one end of a big screwdriver or similar on the turbo, and the other end to your ear, you'll hear if it's the bearings when you rev the engine slightly. Or of course it could be the heatshield! Hope this helps.
