Well, it's quite unlikely that it is 350bhp - just take a look at the dyno print outs that people have submitted. You need significant mods to acheive any where near that. 1.4bar is probably peak boost- with sustained at 1.2bar? Why not have the chap take it on a rolling road. ubject - STI IV Type R

Message - A Friend of mine has just bought an STI IV Type R. The car looks
fairly standard on the outside but I've heard that it apparently has
350-400bhp which I consider to be utter rubbish.
My question is a simple one (kind of), the car is running 1.5 bar which I
thought was very dangerous on an Impreza? Is it? What would need to be done
internally to make this boost level safe?
The car has an Apexi boost gauge which shows that the car had been running
up to 2.0 bar!
Is this car running way too much boost.
It has the standard Intercooler which isn't front-mounted and visually the
car looks untouched (bar an exhaust and filter) it does have a bleed valve
(under bonnet).
He says that he ran the car @ 1.9 bar the other day and it didn't feel much
better than 1.5 bar, which normally would indicate that the car has reached
the limit of it's internals?
I have been in the car and seen it boost to 1.4 bar but to be honest I
wasn't blown away by the performance.
Is it possible that the gauge is incorrect?
I thought going above 1 bar on an Impreza was quite risky.
I remember seeing Trial's Impreza which needed major engine work to produce
a genuine 350bhp so that's why I'm doubting these claims or is there
something I should know about the Type R.
Sorry to come here and ask this question but I want to help out this friend
and I searched on the web but couldn't find anything to help me.
I've tried to give you as much info as I can but I understand that I've
been very vague.

Firstly, 80 squids is a lot for a power run on a rolling road... Don't pay that much!

Secondly, different rolling roads give different figures for the same cars... I personally believe that PowerStation's rolling road is the most accurate I have access to and that PowerEngineering's tends to overestimate figures (346bhp once!).

I too find it very difficult to beleive that the car is 350bhp+, to sustain that type of boost, the car would most certainly need an upgraded intercooler and Water Injection. It's quite easy to have a look in the passenger footwell at the top to see if there are any piggy back systems in place behind the carpet, If theres something besides the Standard ECU then mods are at hand.

Boost gauges can give wrong readings unless you spend £200+ on one, get in on the rollers and see whats been done if anything! If the car has been pushed to 2Bar at standard spec, I would be very careful to what problems may be lurking underneath!

Most boost gauges read no more than 1 PSi off, there was a good range tested in Fast WRX's magazine. (which I still have a few copies of).
