Get the right speaker fitted , then have a listen could be the in- balance between the standard speaker and the focal.

Also remember that the focals take more driving than the standard speakers, maybe time to get a decent amp fitted?

PS Head unit amps are crap anyway, don't beleive the output figures.

Fitted a Focal 165V2 to my car this evening but for some reason it starts to distort. The Left is Focal and the right is crappy Standard Speaker. Yet when you turn the volume up the Focal starts to distort before the standard speaker.....

What have I done wrong???? I am attempting to fit right speaker tomorrow. I know more about nanotechnology than I do about ICE so any help would be appreciated.

Regards
Rich

are you sure it's the speaker distorting and not flapping from the surround/plastic sheeting/...

Monkeh 05 July 2003 10:21 AM

Damn i wish i bought them now i know they fit !!

What head unit have you got, I wonder if it is clipping

R11CH T 05 July 2003 10:29 AM

Standard Headunit and i am sure it is the speaker that is distorting and not the plastic....I knew I should of had them installed professionally.

Fitted the right one last night and it sounds much better than the left one....I am not sure if it is not the speaker that is the problem

Sounds like the speaker or a short to ground on the speaker cable, check the wiring and make sure you have no shorts or bad connections.

You could have the negative and positive speaker wires around the wrong way....

It could be a buggered driver, or it could be a wiring problem (grounding, as mentioned above).

Check all the wiring, if you have a multimeter check resistance of the wiring loom from the back of the head unit to that speaker, it should be around 4 ohm.

On the Left door is the Green or Brown Positive???

PS. Thanks Everyone for your help....

Monkeh 07 July 2003 10:54 AM

Brown is positive on passanger door

R11CH T 07 July 2003 12:38 PM

Thanks Monkeh........I think I have connected the green as the positive will check as soon as I get home......

BigRed 07 July 2003 08:51 PM

Don't think this is a 'out of phase' issue the sound from one speaker would sound O.K, when both are on together you would get a very 'thin' sound with a lack of bass if out of phase, not a distorted sound, double check cables, if no shorts ETC then it is for certain a dodgy driver unit, you check the speaker on another head unit possibly?,or return the whole set of speakers for replacement!!!!

What is the colour of wire for the positive speaker terminal on the drivers door?
