How long does the battery need to be diconnected in order for the ECU to reset?

Regards

not sure what system the scoobys use, on later bosch systems (motornic 7+) power removal does not reset the ecu only the diag tool does, however it does not need to be reset as it can adjust power levels up for better fuel as well as down so doesnt cap the car like the older systems used to.

I have a 97 Wagon...wud this be classed in the older systems?

not sure, flush the tank through with a couple of loads of optimax, take the bat of over night (or as long as you can) then give it 15 mins of hard driving.

If it feels no diff it has an adaptive anti knock system or the battery wasnt off long enough, if it feels faster it doesnt.

I had to reset my ECU beacause of something stupid i did ie, drove my car with speedo cable diconnected because i pulled it out whilst changing to white dials. I was told to diconect the battery for 20 mins.I have a MY98 STI.Everything ok after i did this.Hope this helps.

k9any,

When I reset mine I disconnect the battery over night and then give it a good blat the next morning :D

ian_sadler 01 July 2003 05:46 PM

It's a UK MY98 BTW.

thebothy 01 July 2003 06:40 PM

all sounds like excuses to go for a good blat first thing in the morning if ya ask me

Disconnect the battery then push your foot on the brake will kill any residule power from the cables then allowing you to start the ECU reset procedure straight away.

k9any 02 July 2003 11:41 AM

I was told that the ECU itself has a capacitor which hold charge for the ECU for a certain time period, will holding foot on brakes drain this too?

submannz 04 July 2003 10:34 AM

Yes it does

highlander68k 05 July 2003 09:33 AM

You don't need to disconnect the battery at all to reset the ECU (I'm not even sure if that would do it without keeping the battery disconnected for months)

Nick_TypeUK has supplied the link to the instructions for resetting the ECU.

Just actually wondering why you need to reset the ECU though.

k9any 05 July 2003 02:18 PM

The reason I'm re-setting is that the previous owner ran the car on uleaded fuel...i'm running it on optimax now so i wanted the ecu to pick up the new fuel.
