I have a Driving licence in the format of the Photo-ID credit card and the bit of paper that goes with it.
I can't seem to lay my hands on the piece of paper but I do have the Photo-ID card. What I need to know is do I need both documents in order to hire a car abroad?
I'm off to Italy in a couple of days time.

Thanks in anticipation

The credit card with photo is useless on it's own. You DO need the bit of paper, I'm afraid.

Unless you're going on your own, you could rent the car in someone else's name (gf, wife, friend etc) but still drive it. Or just tell the guy at the counter that you lost the paper on the plane, Italians are generally very helpful and laid back :)

Personally ONLY ever been asked for the paper bit in the UK. Hired cars in Switzerland,France,Germany and Austria. Continental licences are credit card usually. No crappy big A4 sheet. Usually with Hertz. Police in Germany only need the Credit card bit as well.

Searched the house over and over. I know I received it shortly after I moved 18 months ago because when you change address its free to exchange to the new style licence.

Oh well, fcuk it! I'll just take the card and the misses will take her licence too!
Will have to re-apply for another copy of the poxy paper bit when I get back.

The firms in Tenerife only wanted to see the card part, as do the police if they stop you.

Infact if you are staying for more than a holiday, the old paper licence is considered useless and they make you have it officially stamped and then they send you a Spanish version.

Just got back from Cyprus, took both bits and they only wanted to see the photo ID part.
Depends who and where you rent from I think, but they should ask for both bits.
