Hi Guys,

Just looking for a little help here. I had a problem with a machine yesterday so I took out the HDD to copy the stuff over, however plugging into the new machine (in standby didnt realise), the machine reset and the disk can no longer be seen. I think i have well and truly stuffed the disk.

However I do have another 2 identical drives, from the same factory batch. Would swapping the PCB ovll ter allow the drive to be revived ? Only other thing im thinking (before I destroy another good 40 GB drive) is will the motor work after this ?

Regards

stu

does the disk not spin up at all then ??
have you tried this disk in another system, with 2000 or xp on ??

Unfortunatly, it wont even see it in the bios on several other machines. It doesnt spin up I think, will check that later on

if the actual circuit chip has blown on the hard-disk you can swap one from an identical disk, they do come apart near the pins at the front...depends how important the data is ??

swapping boards worked for me, though it was a 10 gig quantum fireball.

there's been a couple of threads on this lately, another guy on here had the same prob with fujitsu drive, but I dont think a board swap works with these drives :( from what i saw.

when I say circuit chip, I mean the small circuit board that comes off every (most) disks near the pins....it's usually these that blow, which can be swapped out from an identical disk. I have used this a few times to recover data.

hello mj, cross posted with you....

IVe tried to remove the PCB but it has those 'kin star shaped nuts. It does seem to come off (brute force used, as well as a few caps knocked off)

I just could do without destroying another drive tbh, but if it gets the data back its kinda worth it (approx 34 GB Mp3s)

"approx 34 GB Mp3s"

business critical data then :D:D

Well perhaps not mission critical :D (but sad none the less) but it would be a royal pain in the arse to re aquire them

Does it have to be a circuit board from an identical drive? will a similar drive's board work?
