I've just fitted an oil temp gauge and was wondering what temperature it should be reading (when warm!)

The reason I ask is my mates temp in his GT4 settles at 65C but mine settles at 95C? (MY95 WRX)Why is there such a difference? or is one reading incorrectly?

Where's the sender unit located in the engine?

The reading on my MY96 in the gallery over cyl 3 is just over 180F for normal use. (That's about 85 C IIRC)

I should add that it's hotter when I drive the car hard, so 95 is not unreasonable based on my car...

As dnb pointed out, "normal" also depends on how you were driving at the time. I see anything between 75 and 100 depending on ambient temperature, traffic, driving style, etc. Longer spirited runs will see it going above 100.

I've got Defi's on a MY99 (RB5)

Normal driving 90 min 95 max

Fast driving 95 maz 110 max

Silly driving 115 max

Don't put any torque into the engine till at least 70 c Sometimes that can be 6 or 7 min's after the water temp is at normal. Now ypu have gauges you will see the true heating up process

Thanks guys, looks like my readings are OK.

dnb, the sensor's mounted on a gadget between the engine and the filter!
