Got a old panasonic laptop. Cannot find charger which should be 15.6v. But have a IBM 16v one spare.

Is it a bad idea????

I think (but am not sure) that the thing you need to check is the current not the voltage. Think too much current can damage it, but I'm not 100% on that......so that wasn't much help :D

current dif is :laptop 3.85 amp. Charger 3.36amp
