Anyone know what Scooby is available in Canada, I'm moving out there next year and fancy one of these as they still havn't got the EVO8 thing sorted out yet.

Canada is getting the North American Sti8 with the 2.5l engine and 300bhp as standard. I think they are quite smug about this as it is the first time they have managed to get a better Sunaru than Europe and Japan. I believe they also get a heated front drivers seat :-)

North Americas, in the most general terms, consider the Evos to be very unreliable.

Canada also gets the standard WRX in similar form to what we get here in the UK.

I can't understand why they are only getting 300BHP out of a 2.5 litre engine, Japan mange to get 280+ out of the 2.0 engine.

In North America the engine has to cope with very bad petrol and very strict emissions regulations. I believe that in California the petrol is 91RON. I don't believe it's possible to get anything higher than that in that particular state.

In Japan they run on 100RON petrol, which is why many cars imported to the UK can run into problems with our 95/97RON petrol and why the JDM cars often produce more bhp than the UK cars.

So, the North American engine has to run at a slightly lower level of tuning than might be possible in the UK or Japan and this explains why they get 300bhp when we might expect the 2.5l engine to produce somewhat more. In saying that it is supposed to be a very nice engine with plenty of torque low down and so it is very pleasant to drive.

The emissions and petrol quality factors may also be why the Evos, which generally run very high boost, are seen in North America as being unreliable.

91Ron No!.... There is no way I could import a Classic STi-V there then.

91 octane, not RON ( octane is (RON+MON)/2 I think )...

Apparently, 91 in american ratings ("pon" according to that site) is equivalent to 95ron.

Anyway it seems that importing cars into usa isn't very cheap so it probably doesn't really matter that they don't have higher octane fuel.

Buy a USDM STi, it is a much better car than the STi Type UK and only costs £19,000 on the road in the USA, very slightly higher price in Canada.

I'm off to Canada for one last check at the end of July, I'll try and get a test drive arranged in the 2.5 litre STi.

I'll have to do a little digging around on the fuel facts as 95 Ron or octane is not that bad once you add a little booster so the mappign must be very 'withing the limits' is it is only kicking out 300BHP from the 2.5 unit.

american fuel is cheap for a reason it does have less energy, however its very easy to get addatives out there the us equivalent of millers etc there are quite a few exotic jap cars over there incl some uber tuned skylines.

is the 2.5 engine in the us car heavier?

here in Canada the highest octane you can get is 94 (Sunoco Gold)

oh, and the fact that right now fuel is

60 cents (87 octane), 66 cents (90 octane) and 72 cents (94 octane)

that is about 25 pence a litre for the piss poor stuff!

Skanky, are there many STi's and Evo's out there (been there 15 times but never really got to see any decent 'metal'), ever seen an S3? (personal import obviously)

Just got my new 2004 Impreza WRX, and am finding the petrol prices in Southern California painful! The best grade you can get is indeed 91 octane, which (in Los Angeles) runs you about $2.15/gallon. Granted, that's still probably better than the prices I was paying in Edinburgh! ;)

Worse yet, the smog is so bad here, instead of an MOT, you must get an annual emmissions test just to keep your vehicle on the road. Anyone have any info on how well the WRX does in that department?

STi's and EVO's are working their way around North America. Standard 227bhp WRX's are wicked abundant. Having driven both the Japan v.8 and the US STi, I must say these motors are two different beasts. The US STi is...very american. It has an amazing mid range, and great top end. The seats are wide and awful. Every thing else is true STi. As said before it is also very affordable at just over 30k USD. You will not be disappointed.

Oh, regarding the max power comment. Yes it puts out "only" 300bhp, yet it also puts out 300ftlbs of torque.
