Roughly how long should it take to transfer a .com domain from one host to another, allowing for DNS records to be updated globally?

DominicA 13 June 2003 10:20 AM

did this on Tuesday myself... took about 24hrs to go global..

Hmmmm

Requested transfer of a .org.uk and .com on Monday. The .org.uk was still being updated on name servers yesterday. The .com still hasn't reached some nameservers (if any)

max ttl (time to tile) for DNS is 5 days usually updates in 24-48 hrs, it depends how commonly queried the domain is, if it is used a lot, then more Nameservers will cache that info and it will take untill the TTL has expired, if the domain is rarely quieried (www and MX) then it could be pretty instantanious :)

.com and all other TLD's (top level domains) can take anything up to 2 weeks as there is more than just DNS, if you are transfering the domain to a different icann accredited registrar then you have to request the transfer.
The tech/admin contacts are then emailed asking if they approve/acknowledge the trasnfer, once approved it takes 5-10 days to move to another registrar, then if Nameservers need changing this can take another few days

Ah I see :)

All of the emails approving the transfer were done on Monday, the transfer window was opened and the transfer requested same day.

I wasn't aware that the actual transfer took so long - modern technology eh? :D

Thanks for the info :)

no probs fig :)
it is a bit of a pain sometimes, especially registra's like Joker.com that require you to open a transfer window :(

ps. that dell laptop dvd-drive you sold me last year is still working perfek ;) god man :)

Ah, guess who mine was with! Yep joker.com. First time I've had to transfer a TLD. Moved others before and they've been PDQ, so mistakenly thought TLDs would be the same (or quicker)

Thought I recognised the name. Glad to hear it's still going strong!

:D
