Hi peeps,

I have a problem that I hope someone can help with. I have a server that I installed many months ago and now some people (ie windows 98 clients) cannot access or even see the shared folder on this server.

Whenever the user tries to connect it says "A password must be supplied to make this connection. Then it says Cognos\IPC$.

I can get the oter clients ie W2K clients on my doing domainname\username and then they can see it fine.

Also the win98 clients can see all the other servers shares, just not this one server.

I also made the rights on this box very secure (too secure?)

Anyone experienced this before/any ideas to fix it ?

I also reshared the IPC$ by doing net share IPC$

You shouldn't ever need to enter a password for this share, but if you're sharing data, why are you using ipc$?

The IPC$ share is used to allow the Server to receive Remote Procedure Calls (sorry if you know this - not trying to teach granny to suck eggs ;) )

Id make a new share (if it is data you're sharing) and check the security....

Im not actually using it to share data, im just trying to connect to see the available shares but it wont actually view any shares whatsoever on the machine in question. Ie the one I want COGNOS_BI cant even be seen by the 98 machines.

i would definately look at your security settings.

if its asking for a password, it doesn't like the one thats being passed by windows98

Remember windows 98 always passes its logon credentials to servers as it wont handle multiple connects using different credentials, so no connectas.

also, have you tried doing a connect directly to the share without browsing the domain ?

also try map ip address\sharename the sometimes gets round these problems. i seem to recall having windows 98 browsing issues in the past.....

I'm having a similar problem as well so any help would be appreciated.

I have two PCs on a home network. One is Win98 and the other is W2K Pro. The W2K machine can see all the shares on the 98 machine, but when the 98 machine tries to access a share on the W2K machine I get the same IPC$ password box as described above. There is nowhere to enter a username or domain and none of the known passwords on either machine work. (The share's permissions are set to give everyone full control)

My work laptop (also W2K Pro, registered on a domain) can see the shares on both PCs with no problems.
