1. For one reason or another the rear two tyres on my scoob need changing before the fronts...

The fronts are at 6mm whilst the back are on 2mm (eek!)..

Anyways, the guy at the tyre place said i should change all 4 together as if i dont i may suffer transmission/diff problems - is this strictly true? I thought it only applied to changing profiles?

2. Would it cause trouble if i changed the rear two tyres for some other brand than the fronts?

AFAIK You wont get any problems with this, you may notice a little difference though.

I would however move the fronts to the rear and put the new ones on the front. Doesnt realy matter if you change brand either. I was running so3's and reo11's for a while before changing all four to F1's.

Cheers

IIRC there have been other threads regarding this subject and the general concensous was to keep the same tyres all round, as there were people reporting the car loosing grip at either the front or the rear, depending on which end had the grippier pattern / compound when mixing brands even models within the same make. I beleive it was more prevalent when road conditions were damp or wet or when pushing near to the limit of the weaker tyres.
