I was going to buy a DELL, PDA, AXIM X5 a while back - didn't as in the USA they dropped the price after launch.

Well, it was rated as the best value PDA then, its even cheaper now at £178!!!!!! Amazing price BUT is it STILL the best at the price??

I can't justify spending silly money (over £250 on one) so? what do you experts reckon??

Its here:-

i wonder if you can buy it online at www.hp.com.my/store :) as the iPAQ 1910 is only about £163!

pslewis 10 June 2003 12:17 PM

I should think they are only avaiable from DELL direct wouldn't you?

The IPAQ you mentioned, does it live up to the spec of the Dell Axim X5??

Pete

I just had a look and the 1910 Ipaq is only 200mhz and about £220 on the HP buy on line store.

The Dell one look good and now I've seen it am very tempted to get one.

pslewis 10 June 2003 12:42 PM

The spec seems to blow the competition clean out the water doesnt it??

Pete

I have spent a lot of time looking at this. The Dell is the best value by a long way and support 3 different types of media as standard, that is Compact Flash, MMC and SD. This is great as 256MB CF cards are about 35 pounds now. That is about 60 MP3s.

You can also buy Consumer IR (universal remote) software through the internet so you can use it as a universal remote.

I want to buy one but just don't have the money at the moment.

They are only available through Dell.

Bravo2zero_sps 10 June 2003 02:56 PM

Where can u get the 256mb cards from as the Dell site will only let you upgrade to 128mb?

I want to get the cheaper one out the two with the slower processor and spend the difference on more memory.

nebben 10 June 2003 05:10 PM

The Dell is the best deal. They can undercut just about everyone else.

As far as I knew, the Axim's CF slot would accept any CF card? I've seen CF as large as 512mb.

Compact Flash 256 MB. Got to www.expansys.co.uk. I think that they are £36 including vat.

pslewis 10 June 2003 11:39 PM

Anyone actually got one by any chance?

Pete

pslewis 11 June 2003 05:57 PM

Surely someone on here has bought one??

Pete

Bravo2zero_sps 11 June 2003 06:46 PM

I'm waiting for you to buy one first to see whether you say its good value or not :p

Dream Weaver 12 June 2003 08:48 AM

So am I ;)

pslewis 12 June 2003 09:42 AM

Tell you what? You both donate, say £50 each to my cause and I will AND let you know what I reckon, seems very fair to me!! :D

I bought an X5 a few weeks ago, fitted it with 64mb SD and a CF Wireless Lan.

It works very nicely, I am currently using it to help out with a comms cabinet/patch port audit.

I can only compare it to an old Palm III so whether it is good compared to other Pocket PC devices I cannot say.

a couple of reviews:-

and

http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/review/12/1/2472.html

I very tempted to get one with 256mb of ram just for playing mp3s on the train and playing that drug dealing game that first came out on the old palm series handhelds :D

markr1963 13 June 2003 09:51 AM

Got an Axim X5 earlier this week

Where's the best place to get CF wireless lan cards?

gregh 13 June 2003 10:15 AM

The 1910 was £195 inc VAT at Dixons Heathrow on thursday, here's a piccie of the 1910 vs the Dell for size. BTW I don't think the Dell supports SDIO which will limit the cards you can use in the SD slot.

If I were looking to buy right now I'd hang on until the rumoured PPC 2003 launch on 23rd June.

Mark did you buy any extras with it? Did it come with a cradle or you have to buy that seperately?

What do you think of it in terms of quality etc?

markr1963 13 June 2003 11:23 AM

Bravo2

I ordered a couple of PCs from DELL for work and managed to blag the Axim gratis :D:D

I got the base model that can with just the USB lead, a case and ActiveSync etc. Not had much chance to play with it yet but so far I'm impressed. Just ordered 128MB SD and a CF WLAN gizmo, should get 'em Monday. Then let the playing commence :D

Bravo2zero_sps 13 June 2003 11:26 AM

LOL nice one, u lucky sod :p

Now gonna buy the better processor one as it comes with cradle so the other one by the time u add a cradle to it doesnt work out much different

Then just gonna add a 256mb card and I'll be well away :D

pslewis 13 June 2003 11:34 AM

The performance one also has more room for the up and coming upgrade to PocketPC - the lower spec one may not be able to run it ... if thats important to you that is!!

Pete

Bravo2zero_sps 13 June 2003 11:46 AM

Whats better compact flash or MMC and why is MMC only upto 128mb?

Bravo2zero_sps 13 June 2003 11:48 AM

Yeah cheers Pete.

For the sake of £30 odd quid its worth it with more memory and better processor.

Hopefully will phone up and order this afternoon as I hate ordering over the web  Expansys do 256mb compact flash cards for £36 so bargain :) and cheers to the blokey who suggested them on page 1 :)

pslewis 13 June 2003 03:10 PM

I think the difference in price is nearer to £55 than £30!!

Pete

Bravo2zero_sps 13 June 2003 03:36 PM

Not for me cos I want the cradle so the cheaper one is £179 + £30 for cradle, so costing me £210 when the better one is £240 with cradle so the £30 difference to me is worth the extra processor and memory :)

gregh 13 June 2003 04:27 PM

Make sure you get a free upgrade to PPC 2003 if your buying now.

Bravo2zero_sps 13 June 2003 04:39 PM

Just called them and they said its 2002 and they have no date for when they will sell with 2003  so told them I don't want it then :p

pslewis 13 June 2003 10:37 PM

Will they need to sell off the ones with licences for PPC2002? or will they just reload with PPC2003???

The lower spec one can't run PCP2003, can it??

Will there be bargains afoot??

Pete

Bravo2zero_sps 13 June 2003 10:43 PM

I should imagine they can as the Ipaq 1910 is ony 200 mhz processor and i cant see all the 1910 models becoming out of date by not being able to run the latest software. Dont quote me on that tho :p
