Can you grow grapes in Britain - Manchester to be more specific.
I have just finished making the biggest trellis in the universe and I thought a bit of fruit would be nice to grow on it.

Anyone done it or have any other suggestions?

cheers,

mike.

You can grow grapes. The guy with the garden adjacent to my mother's was always giving me bunches of em when I was a kid. they were not quite like the seedless ones from sainsbuy's though

i think you need a greenhouse mate.
my dad used to grow them in his when i was a nipper but never outside, dont think our weather is constant enough

It should be possible, otherwise the English wine industry will have problems.

This might help if you have a sunny wall

Grapes will grow in a greenhouse - we had green and purple grapes all the time when I was growing up.

Just had to remember to shake the bunch after picking it to get most of the bugs off then whack the whole thing into some water with potassium permanganate disolved in it to kill off germs, get rid of the more persistant bugs and stuff.

We're growing some now in fact, but they *do* need to be in a greenhouse over here. :)

I definitely remember them growing on a trellis frame with no greenhouse attached. Presumably some varieties are more tolerant of our weather than others.

There probably are strains that you can get these days that are more resilient to colder climes. :)

chhers peeps, I will look into it and give it a go - btw, the trellis has sun on it most of the day.

ta,

mike.
