It's so damned hard to find! Anyone know a good mail-order supplier?
I'll probably end up buying some from Twynham Grange but they're fairly expensive and the delivery charges are huge. Any other suggestions of where to get it from? |
Why, what meat does Parmesan normally contain?
|
'Normal' parmesan contains rennet, which is part of the animal's stomach. Vegetarian parmesan is made without rennet.
|
My local sainsbury's has the twyneham grange stuff.
not that I object to eating animals stomachs. |
Well as it happens, I'm looking for some Rennet essence - Tesco's online don't seem to sell it. Perhaps we could come to some arrangement Mark?
|
I'm not the veggie, my wife is. :D
PC - funny, 'cos all the Sainsburys we've been to in the last 6-8 months have stopped doing it. Mind you, it'd probably be cheaper for you to buy a load from your Sainsburys, add a little margin on, and post it up to me here, than it is to buy direct from Twyneham Grange (check the postage on their site, you'll see what I mean). James - I don't get you? What sort of arrangement? |
Hmm, not sure we can condone rennet sharing!
Isn't rennet just the bacteria from the animal's stomach (rather than the stomach itself) which ferments the milk products into cheese (similar to 'live' yogurts and the like) ? http://biology.clc.uc.edu/Fankhauser/Cheese/Rennet/Rennet.html Do vegetarians try to avoid eating bacteria? |
TBH, I've absolutely no idea, not being veggie myself. Frankly, the idea of spending the rest of my life without eating a bacon sandwich sounds totally inhumane to me. ;)
However, I do know that any product containing parmesan with rennet in it is not counted as Suitable for Vegetarians by the Veggie Society, so there must be something in it. Anyway, apparently there's another Sainsburys store (a big SavaCentre the other side of Edinburgh) which might still stock the stuff, so we may be alright afterall. |
I thought you might like to extract the rennet essence and sell it to me? Enterprising, non?
|
LOL. You plonker. ;)
Wouldn't work anyway, 'cos just removing the rennet still leaves the cheese 'contaminated'. It'd be like serving up a bacon sandwich, taking away the bacon, and declaring the roll vegetarian. |
MARKO give me a ring 07970281717
I own a cheese shop! Don't sell the veggy stuff but can sort you out? SIMON |
why not eat anything beforehand that doesn't agree with you and then chunder over the meal - tastes the same as parmesan anyway ;):D
connoisseur or what  |
Simon, thanks for that. We should be okay, as we've now found a Sainsburys which stocks the veggie stuff in Edinburgh.
I'll give you a call if we need any cheese though. :D |
