We're moving down to Wiltshire in July to a place with a thatched roof. I've just been on-line to get some buildings insurance quotes and with contents, we're looking at £1,100 a year!! That's for for £330,000 buildings insurance and £60,000 contents. There's a very informative website which says why the incidence of fire in houses with thatched roofs is so much lower because the owners are so much more careful, why is it so expensive?

Be interested in your feedback.

From what I remember of a friend who lived in a thatch house, it's more to do with cost of repairs and ongoing maintenace than fire hazzards. Could be wrong though

£330,000 is a very high rebuild value. Are you sure about this figure? Must be a pretty big gaf...

For £330,000 you could rebuild Wiltshire!!

Try legal and general as they are always the cheapest (ignoring scum merchants such as tesco and direct-line though) :D:D

Big gaf?

No, it's tiny. I've just pulled out the figure from the surveyor's report but it is Grade 2 listed if that counts for anything.

had a holiday in Hampshire once and most of the houses in the village were thatched - talking to neighbour down there and they were of the opinion they should be re-thatched every 10 years to get the best out of them  and he wasn't a thathcher ;)

the owners might be more careful re fire etc but that doesn't stop anybody else being less careful... :(

My mum's last two houses are Thatched. I personally have never seen the good side to them as there are always Wasps/Bee Nests hiding and you never get any signal on your mobile! But they do look very pretty.

I would look at prices for a local Thatcher to get a good idea of the prices that you will get charged once you need to sort out any patches etc or re-thatch the whole place!

Also be aware that Thatched Houses can affect more than one premium! Not just Household Insurance.

Hope I helped! :) B x

Kav,
We are insured at a very reasonable rate, give Playle-Russel (spaecial risks) LTD, of Romsey a ring on 01794 324417
They don't just do thatched, they do alsorts of spaecial risks, as you might have guessed.
If you fancy Dorset and not Hampshire, adn a house with a nig garage, http://www.connells.co.uk/detail.asp?id=533100428

Ron.
