Just a small question, but is it intentional that the fuel gauge continues to read the level even after the key has been removed...the car in question is a MY00 Turbo.

Yes it is, tis designed to do this as its really the only time you can't see it moving down towards Empty

It's called a static fuel gauge (i think!)

...and it shows the toe rags who are considering blagging the car that its got a full tank of petrol so they can go 300 miles (OK, 180 at toe rag speed) before dumping it???

I'd rather have it show empty with the ignition off. Can it be done?

I'm sure a simple relay would do the trick.

I did a bit of investigating yesterday to find the fuel pump, whilst I was about it I found the fuel level sender unit. I unplugged a socket to see if it was the right one for the fuel pump and the gauge started heading for empty (nothing unusual there then!) What I'm getting at is that if you could sort the wiring to cut the gauge wire when you kill the ignition, then the gauge would go to empty. Oh and just so you know the socket is under the rear seat squab on the drivers side, with four wires going in and (curiously) five coming out. The sender wires are the smaller two of the four.

The wifes T plated fiesta also has a static temperature gauge. The wife has worked that she can tell if i was giving her car any pain from the temperature i left it at.
