Ok,

my brand spanking new D-Link wireless roter arrived today, and i want to get it set up while I am waiting for broadband to be enabled.

A while back me and a so-called techie mate tried to get the two machines at work to talk through a router - one was W2K and the other 98SE - and they were having none of it, well, not quite Mr W2K could see and access Mr 98SE, but not visa-versa.

My two machines at home are XPPro&W2K - how easy is it? will I have many problems - or is that a piece of string type question?
XPPro on main machine, W2K on laptop with wireless card.

cheers,

mike.

Think you might need W2K pro not standard, could be wrong but I had the same problems with WXP and W2K Pro, never did get them to talk to each other.

No such thing as Windows 2000 Standard ;)

Create an account on each PC with the same username and password.

PC1

Accounts :

Fred
Bill

PC2

Accounts:

Fred
Bill

Match passwords for both users.

cheers,

DJ140, you may be getting mixed up with millenium edition.

Mickle 28 May 2003 05:02 PM

Also you need to set the security rights on the Win 2000 to allow connection to it across the network

beemerboy 28 May 2003 05:04 PM

edited coz is was talking rubbish...

ok, getting fed up now.

tried the duplicate log on thing.

followed the instructions in the router book.

do i obtain IP adresses automatically or put in the one the book says, and if so are they the same for each machine?

In about 30 minutes a grands worth of Toshiba laptop is going through the bedroom window with furious force.

someone give us a clue what in tarnation i am supposed to do. :(

I cant find any other puters on the network, and the CD that came with the router only has a pdf manual on it:eek: - the alcatel jobbie at work was a piece of p1ss to get working - though that was with 2 W2K machines.

Dunno about any books but there was a thread in the last few days re. WXP/H and WIn98.

Unless your running a DHCP server (prob. not) hard code the IP addresses thus...

192.168.1.10 on one machine, 192.168.1.20 on the other. Set subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 (I think).

Try and take it in stages. Basic IP first, then the SMB or CIFS file sharing stuff. Ping can be useful if it demonstrates that one's not completely p*ssing upwind.

Also it might be helpful to turn off 'simple file sharing' on the XP/P box. Open 'My Computer', then tools drop-down, then folder options. SFS is the last tickbox on the 'view' tab.

If all else fails, put toys away carefully and quietly pour yourself a large drink. If one doesn't suffice, repeat prescription. :-)

The router should be allocating the addresses, open a command prompt and type in ipconfig

then tell us the results

Have you ran the network wizard on the machine running XP ? Have you shared files ? Had the same drama with two XP machines and ran the network setup wizard on both machines, and it has worked fine since. I connected with a machine running Win2k the other day, no problems

Phill

PS Have you got a firewall installed ?

Figment 29 May 2003 11:08 AM

You also need to check in local security policy that the sharing model for local accounts is set to classic - local users authenticate as themselves.

mj 29 May 2003 11:12 AM

thanks chaps,

I have shared files on both machine,

run the network setup wizard on the XP, made a disk - popped it in the W2K , to be told it was not suitable for that OS.

I will check local security policy and some of the others tonight.

Keep em' comin :D, and be on standby at about 7 tonight when i get in

Thanks again,

Mike.

mj,

I tried to do this for ages, (i.e. get WK2 Pro & WXP to talk). Following advice on here, specifically the stuff about adding duplicate accounts, it works. I can give you details of my setup if required.

mj 29 May 2003 12:21 PM

Big,

Any info you have is gratefuly welcomed, mail me if you prefer.

Many thanks,

Mike.

Remote host said: 550-maj@clara.net is not an active address at this host (This customer does not
550 have a @clara.net address. Please try <maj@clara.co.uk> instead.)
Giving up on 195.8.69.224.

This is harder than solving the network problem ;)

mj 29 May 2003 05:47 PM

the plot thickens!

I just set up a new machine at work with XPhome on it - I have now go it talking to my W2k machine.

But I am buggered if I dcan remember how :D

oh well, now o see if I get look at the XP with mine

BigGT3Fan 29 May 2003 08:33 PM

mike,

XP to W2k isn't the problem is it? I could always do that too, it was accessing the XP machine from W2K I couldn't do, until I solved it by adding the extra a/c's....

i goy the xp&w2k machines at work talking niceley via a wired alcatel router.

its this feckin laptop thats driving me bonkers, on the control panel for the router i cant get any signal strengh - i am reading the manual now. ( me thinks that should have been the first port of call :D)

mj 29 May 2003 10:13 PM
