I'm havin a few problems trying to get my XP machine to network to a 98 machine...... I think it's because of the restictions on XP home (correct me if I'm wrong )

can I upgrade the OS to XP pro ? or is it a wipe and change :(

Craig.

Hi RB5-Black,

XP Home supports file and printer sharing etc. If you're just after occasional drive sharing on a home network you shouldn't have too much bother. Can you at least 'ping' the other machine?

There are several articles for free on the web re. how to set things up for both XP/H and XP/P. Try searching google UK for "winxp drive sharing"

...and with that he shoots himself in the foot.... :rolleyes

There's some maybe useful links in the above url.

As Vindaloo says, XP Home should have the functions you need to share files & printers with another machine.

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/.../troubleshoot/ has some helpful tips and bits.

It can be a nightmare getting the two OS talking to each other!

XP to XP machines fine XP to 98 when using the XP network wizard = nightmare. It really gives you random results when using the XP network wizard.

Your best bet and depending on your network/pc knowledge is to leave the wizard alone and set it up by hand. Main pointers are to keep the machines in the same subnet and give them the same workgroup name. Also make sure file and print sharing is installed and enabled on the 98 machine.

..and ensure there is a user account on the XP machine with credentials exactly matching those on the 98 machine
