Just heard on the Radio that the Supermarkets have launched a petrol price war!!!

Spend £150 on shopping at Safeway and get petrol for 34p a litre!!

I think the deal is that when you spend over 150 quid their fuel is half price, spend over 130 quid and its 50p a litre and so on.

Anyway, I dont think they sell high octane stuff.

Just tried Texaco Super plus today for the first time, not to bad.

Stickymicky - who do you think makes supermarket fuel - you dont honestly think Tescos/Sainsbury/Safeway etc have their own refineries? The big boys produce their petrol for them.

As I understand it, SuperMarket full tends to have less quality control, rather than be worse fuel.

They are less strict about it's condition when storing, transporting and dispensing the fuel, and they buy the fuel with a greater "tolerance". So you may get a good batch or a bad batch from a supermarket, but your Optimax / ESSO SUL will USUALLY be the same as the last batch you bought down the road.

I heard somewhere that the reason supermarket fuel was cheaper was because there is a legal tolerance of +/- ?? on the fuel delivery, so in effect you dont get as much petrol as the pump says you have and therefore no cheaper...allegedly.

Don't think so matey, the council regularly check the calibration on all fuel pumps. I can't see that supermarkets could get away with having one's that werent accurate.

Chaps, sorry to p!ss on your fireworks, but the fuel sold by the major supermarkets aka Sainsburys, Tescos, is exactly the same as sold by the so called big boys aka Texaco, Total, Shell(except Optimax) ....I work at a fuel distribution depot

The reason that 'supermarket' petrol is normally cheaper is that they offset some of the cost against the store running costs. When they first started selling petrol they actually run the stations at a loss (it was a lot cheaper back then).

As for being inferior quality, in the early days they did not have all the additives added when the petrol was loaded. Nowdays, as far as I am aware,(with the exception of Optimax) they get the same additives as the oil giants own brand.

What you have to take into account is that if the 'supermarket' petrol was inferior and engine problems were caused because of it they would be open to massive law suits.

I think the main cause of concern would be JDM imports as the additives in Japanese fuel could well be different to that of our own. Any vehicles designed for the European market should be designed to run of the fuel available to those markets.

Only my opinion but I did used to deliver the stuff so picked up little bits of info along the way.

who do you knows had a new engine due to running 'supermarket' petrol?... Scoobs don't have to run on Optimax! (maybe except JDM's) but UK cars can run on 95ron just fine! I always put the 'cheapest' 73.9p.. if i can find it... usually Fina..in MY97 car and it runs fine!.. 91k-miles.... and 4years of my ownership and the cars still going strong.

Maybe its all these ppl who think pro-boost etc in their tanks helps!

how about the bloke from work who has blew up 4 impreza engines, lack of octane, supermarket fuel etc etc etc all JDM cars ???

he now stays well clear of crap petrol and has scince got rid of his last impreza and runs a nice evo

i run a 01 and it runs fine on normal unleaded.Its slighty sharper on optimax but at half price a litre i'm filling up at safeways.
also agree with above i deal with the supermarkets and they are cut throat with suppliers, they want high specification at a cheap price ...if they could they would sell optimax at 20p a litre .
They sell fuel as a loss leader ie to get it really cheap you have to spend over £150@ safeway . The more quickly they turnover stock the more money they make simple as that.
there is no plot to sell short measure or dodgy fuel they value their reputations too much.Hope that helps

It's the same with the electricity and gas that you can now buy from Sainsbury's. Cheaper than the "big boyz" but there's no way I'm sticking that stuff in my Hi-Fi or Oven. Probably got less Volts or Amps or something. And not as clean.

A "fuel distribution depot" You mean youre a petrol pump attendant :-) Only funning.

I find that even when using unleaded fuel and octane booster there is pinking. Same as when using Optimax, theres a little bit of pinking. The best being Esso SUL with no pinking, very smooth indeed, or i have found the Texaco stuff ok.

I ran a Mk1 StiWagon for 2 years on normal unleaded, did 50K Miles. No issue. Probably as it was only 240 BHP(no other mods) and I never derestricted it. So using normal unleaded is not always a death sentence for your engine.
