Took my MR2 out for a wee spin today for the first time in months, i remember it was quick but it's just unreal. Wipes the floor with all us scooby drivers by a long shot. such a shame about the lag though......

jjones 23 May 2003 12:10 AM

waiting patiently for someone to say "twisties"

RB5_245 23 May 2003 12:28 AM

Agree, those bits were slighly more stressful than in the scoob lol

Crush 23 May 2003 12:49 AM

I was in one the other night, and they are quick :D

240 bhp mid engined RWD = :D :D :D

they're 2 different cars though. Both have good & bad points

TVR Gary 23 May 2003 08:46 AM

They may be quick but i still dont think as quick as a good scoob

Skittles 23 May 2003 09:10 AM

But quicker, for a fraction of the price

killemonthecorners 23 May 2003 09:29 AM

youve missed the best points about the mr2

no screamin kids in the back, no taxi runs and its too low for old people to climb in and out! just fast impractical fun.

both cars suffer form the same problem of to much understeer.

Anonymous bob 23 May 2003 09:30 AM

Not as quick as a 'ggod' scoob? Wat the hell does that mean? 1 rusted, oil leaking bald tyred MR2 vs a race prepped cut slicked, turbo'd to the eyeballs scoob?? Like the guys say... 2 different cars built for different circumstances... On a dry day, the tubby will probably keep up with you on the bends, depending on driver, and will be faster on the straights, but if it is wet/damp, then bye bye tubby!!

RB5320 23 May 2003 09:37 AM

too much understeer in a turboed MR2? Seriously?
I have only been in one and that was oversteer city until a few mods were done. Eventually it was a very balanced car, still prone to controllable oversteer when provoked. Definitely a match for a scooby so long as the MR2 driver can drive it properly.

philz 23 May 2003 12:53 PM

How do you get a mid engined, RWD car to understeer?

I certainly haven't been able to do it in mine

DAYZEE 23 May 2003 01:36 PM

I got mine to understeer once when I first got it. Into a roundabout too fast, hard on the brakes in the wet and hey presto. Didn't do it for long, just eased off the brakes and it went round the corner no probs. All down to driver error rather than a charateristic of the car.

RB5_245 23 May 2003 02:09 PM

I got mine to understeer once, at 5mph on full lock! i can only guess you have cut slicks on the back and re-molds on the front. And over the twisties in th dry the scoob is ultimately faster given unreal grip and stability the MR2 doesn't have.... mind you I am comparing it to an RB5

WRX280 23 May 2003 02:15 PM

I always say the stock Rev 3 MR2 (240BHP) and a WRX (260BHP) is a fair comparison.

I understand there 2 different cars, but looking at it from a sportscar point of view, overall i'd say the MR2 Turbo is a more refined, powerful and reliable car all day long.

Cheers

RB5_245 23 May 2003 03:11 PM

I was putting the Rev 2 (205 BHP) against a uk wrx, never driven a rev 3 but would love a shot, i'd think it would put a lot of cars to shame.

XT 23 May 2003 03:14 PM

never driven a rev 3 but would love a shot, i'd think it would put a lot of cars to shame

Including the RX-7 Mk3

WRX280 23 May 2003 03:43 PM

The Rev 2 is 220BHP standard.

The MR2 is no doubt quicker then a UK spec Impreza, noticeabley quicker after 70 odd MPH.

NICE car if you work in a hair salon

XT 23 May 2003 04:00 PM

Funny how many people relate RWD cars with hair salons

I guess that the hairdressers know how to tame a RWD car and the rest don't ;)

Anonymous bob 23 May 2003 04:26 PM

its almost as reliable as a scooby owner saying twisties!! We are all hairdressers, and you all cannot drive a car unless it does the driving for you..each to their own

XT 23 May 2003 04:28 PM

bob, I am a 'hairdresser' myself :D

Anonymous bob 23 May 2003 04:33 PM

No comment!! I am a man and sweat profusely, and drink lager... in case anyone was wondering....

philz 23 May 2003 04:51 PM

LOL, just cos some MR2's are T-bars they're immediately hairdressers cars. Doesn't matter about the mid engine design, the RWD or the 241BHP, they're always gonna be hairdressers cars.

*sigh*

oh well, I'm off home in 10 mins, might as well take the T-bars off and go Scooby baiting :D

TREG 23 May 2003 05:12 PM

Had one in front of me the other day and yes there fast-but he couldnt shake me off his tail-he was pushing so hard,he almost lost it!

steve G MAN 23 May 2003 05:33 PM

been here lots before mr2 handles rubish and everyone knows it look at the write ups in mags its in black and white but each to there own. i cant understand why you would even argue there is no contest.

scoobynutta555 23 May 2003 05:41 PM

Dont know where u get a standard mr2turbo quicker than a standard P1 in a straight line? I raced one in my old my93 wrx and in straight line his speed was pretty crap, smoked every gear change too.

MR2 Rob 23 May 2003 06:37 PM

MR2 handles rubbish eh? Was it the BSM guide to sensible motoring review you read??? :)

Its a fantastic handling car - thats why I snapped the guys hand off when I test drove mine. The only time you are likely to loose it is if you go steaming into a tight corner and then hit the breaks because it ends up as a pendulum.
With MR2's you have to get your breaking done before the corner in a straight line, then you can power through the curve and even accelerate at a much earlier point out of it. And as with all mid engine rwd cars, in the wet you go round roundabouts gently.

The Turbo's are fantastic - you can get an OK one for £3.5K and are looking at great performance. Ever noticed how some of the fastest Supra's have had their engines removed and the 3S-GTE engine from an MR2 put in???

silver-sub 23 May 2003 06:39 PM

raced one recently and have to say i was well impressed, what a motor! (oh yeh and Toyota UK service them, unlike Subaru)

Sparky1066 23 May 2003 06:48 PM

Who's cares if an MR2 Turbo is quicker than a Scooby? We go on this website coz we like our Scoobs. I had a late MR2 Turbo before my Scoob and it wasn't any quicker, and the handling sucked in comparison. I had it for a while so I know how they handle. It is a nice car, but no quicker. My mates S13 200SX used to leave the MR2 for dead. Scoobs are not slow.

Anonymous bob 23 May 2003 07:04 PM

200sx leave an MR2 Turbo for dead??? erm... hmmmm... ok... if you say so!

RB5_245 23 May 2003 07:13 PM

Well, I started the thread as i took mine for a spin and the scoob felt slow afterward (not P1). Rev 2 is 205bhp, same engine as celica GT4 (before round lights). 175bhp at the wheels as opposed to my scoobs 178 both on the same rollers.

They grip well but always go by the back in my experece and i have had my share of leaving roundabouts sideways
