My father-in-law got one sept '02 and twice the paddles on the steering wheel have packed up. He has worked out that the BMW dealer has had his car in for repairs one day per week of owning the car.Is there any one else with this or knows of this problem as he is getting mighty pi$$ed off with it.
Thanks Adam |

In his position, if it's been back frequently to the SAME dealership for the SAME fault to be rectified, suggest he tries another dealer. Not all professionals have the answers even BMW ones. Try another dealership - might have the answer and do the trick.

If he has only had the car as short a time as that he should ask them to swap it for a similar car of the same value.
The SSG box is different from the SMG box fitted in the M cars, the ssg box isn't quite as sophisticated, and isn’t that well loved, although I hadn't heard of any reliability problems. I’d get him to ask for a normal manual or steptronic auto, which is a great auto box and has a pretty good manual override system. Good luck. |
to the top for the in-law

I'm just about resisting the temptation to bitch about BMW's so called superior build quality.
In all seriousness if he has had the car in the dealership on average one day per week might I suggest he gets in touch with the UK arm or even the German arm of BMW's customer service department. Joking aside I have heard that one good aspect of BMW is their customer service is a good few levels above many of the other car companies. This would be my next port of call if it was me. The SSG box fitted in the 330 is the Magneti Marelli system as fitted in the Alfa Selespeeds and Italian exotica.
The SMG box in the M3 is a Bosche system. Lee |
Any more answers???

What are the problems?
Not changing up or down, missing gears, only run in Auto mode? Is it fine using the gearstick switch rather than the paddles? Lee [Edited by logiclee - 5/24/2003 9:52:56 PM] |
