Just back with my 205 Mi16

Conversion from a 1.6 was done over the weekend – with an 80k mile MY90 Mi16 1.9 alloy 16v engine put in place.

First off can I say how incredibly satisfying it is driving a car that looks like an 11 year old 1.6 which can do so much more :D

Very impressed with the difference – it’s a much smoother car to drive under 4k revs and there is a big difference in low down and mid range torque. Once over 4k revs the car flies :)

It’s a very different speed experience than the Scooby. The pug is all revs and dramatics and it feels initially strange to keep your foot down when my natural reaction is to change up.

I suppose my biggest concern about getting the Mi16 work done was that the difference in power and driving experience in reality didn’t match with my expectations (given all you read about how good the Mi16 conversion is). I’m pleased to say that it really does live up to everyone of my expectations.

Sounds ace :D

Standard Mi16 conversions (they put out around 160 bhp before tuning :)) do 0-60 in around 6.5s.

Not sure what the 30-70 or 50-70 times are.

how much does it cost to get done too?

80k 1.9 16v Mi16 engine supplied - fully fitted (inc. new timing belt + pulleys) + various additional parts (H/D rear mount, radiator bracket etc).

Also got a 309 front end at the same time which gives longer bottom arms + shafts (and hence slightly more negative camber), and a stiffer anti-roll bar, and it also gives 1.9 hubs + brakes.

All in for £1,100 (no VAT) + I'm getting an unlimited mileage 3 month warrenty with the work and engine.

Boss Hogg - it was a couple of guys near Dunfermline (Scotland).

They've done a pile of Mi16 conversions before and race their own at Knockhill. One of their cars currently puts out around 220 bhp :)

It's was in good nick when I got it but a couple of the seats were ripped. It did cost me all of £50 to get replacement front and back seats from an knackered doner car ;)

I am moving to dunfermline in the next few months and really fancy a 205 mi16 that i could use for track days. Do you have any contact details for the guys who do the conversions. Are you planning on taking yours to Knockhill?

How did you go on with the wiring and management, I heard the wiring is the same, it's just a case of swapping the ECU?

The wiring loom and ecu are all taken from the doner Mi16 engine car - makes it all a lot easier (so I'm led to believe!).

You can do it by using the 205 dizzy and keeping your existing wiring loom and ecu - you need to buy and adaptor to fit the dizzy to the Mi16 - I think Autofive do the part - it's detailed in CCC mag's conversion.

Scotsman - next thing - some throttle bodies!

Need to do some more work on the suspension before more power mods :)
