Went to Japfest yesterday and was looking at the RX7.

I didnt realise they were 1.3l Rotory engines!!!!!!!!!

Can someone explain them to me in normal man terms how they work please

I think its because they have been making normal over head cam and piston engines for ages now and changing to an engine of this type would mean a huge re-arrangment for making the engine e.t.c, plus they where very thirsty, and not to reliable after 70,000miles, and not to many people are trained to repair them...

The newer engine i.e the RX-8 are supposed to be alot better and more economical, may be this will be the way forward soon as the
government keep bringing in tax based on engine cc, but i doubt it.

The most 'unrealised' thing is that although the 'output' shaft may say 7000RPM, that piece of 'toblerone' in the middle is turning at 2,100RPM... puts the whole thing in a different light doesn't it!?!

is a wankel engine ...psml ....twin tub like your washing machine at home :p ;) :D

mycroft ... its the other way round .. the rotor spins at 1/3 the speed of the eccentric shaft (rotary equivilent of a crank)

P.S the unreliable thing is only really applicable to the last generation where mazda went all out with the power and lost the reliability ... normally aspirated engines in the USA normally last well over 100,000 miles and more

Don't forget Dr Wankel disowned the type of engine which commonly carries his name.

His original design and prototype had both a moving rotor AND rotor housing. The housing spinning at a slower rate than the rotor.

A few teething production problems (for example, changing the three spark plugs on the single-rotor prototype would mean removing the entire engine from the vehicle :D) meant that NSU went for a fixed-housing variation.

Dr Wankel told NSU: "You have turned my racehorse into a carthorse" and disowned their designs! (however, he was happy enough to take the patent license money)
