I was at Brands on Monday (on track day g.p circuit)noticed a lot of road cars with very small number plates/stickers ,they looked as though they improve cooling etc..Is this legal for a scooby ? I know the rally cars have the stick on version.Just wondered if it could be got away with on the road.
Obviously the rear remains the same size so those much hated gatso's can still catch you.

No it's not legal, I thought it was only the E-type Jag that can have the stick on number plate!

That said, I have just ordered a 12" by 4" number plate for the front of the car!!! Again it is illegal, but it will improve cooling to the radiator during the summer months!! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Is it going on a u.k car? My current plate is just stuck on, are the front plate mountings the same on WRX and UK cars?

The cars with the very small plates (motor bike plates i thk) were porsche RS's and various skylines,the dimensions you suggest
are slighty larger than they were sporting.

How many digits are on your plate may i ask?

6 digits all in all! It's going on a UK car, but it's due in a few days time! I'll let you know how I get on!

The motorbike ones were about 11" by 3", I wanted sometime a little bigger that's all!!

You can make the plates smaller if you have a private registration with less characters than a standard plate. The guidelines are set out on DVLA form V796 but are generally as follows:-

Space between nearest parts of each character - 11mm

Space between 2 groups of characters - 33mm

Top, bottom and side margins at least 11mm

From the above it can be seen that the less characters you have on a plate, the smaller you can make it.

Obviously the actual characters must remain the standard size of 79mm high x 57mm wide - so really small plates are a real no no. The form also states that misrepresentation of the registration can lead to a fine of £1000-not nice.

I have a slightly smaller (though legal) number plate on my car (5 characters) but have moved the mounting uo and forward so it now sits in front of the bumper. This was very easily done using some longer bolts and spacers throught the original mounts. There are some pictures on my web site. Follow the link to "see more pictures"

I have a stick on number plate, that is located on the leading edge of the bonnet. It looks cool & I have never been stopped!

The background and letters are bought seperatly from any motorworld shop. They are the same size as a standard plate and it cost me about £7.00. They only do the front ones!!!

P.S. It totally transforms the front of the car, as you have the big space at the front for the radiator intake.
