Ok guys it seems like i am no longetr gonna go for a impreza so i was still thinking along the lines of a turbo car and i can insure a Audi A3 1.8 T Sport 3dr for around £800 as am ony 20 thats gonna do me!Just need to ask u guys advice?Does anybody know if they are any good? Plus its only comes with 150bhp standard so whats the best way to get the bhp up!!

Flat 4x4 16 May 2003 04:07 PM

Buy a Skoda vRS (or Seat Leon) instead year-for-year and you'll save a fortune against an A3 with the 'same' engine

TaviaRS 16 May 2003 04:11 PM

Get a Skoda instead! :D

I hear that the 1.8 turbos can be made fairly brisk and that the RS seems to come with 190bhp as standard. The RS version holds its value well, servicing is very cheap, insurance is bearable, and the Skoda badge is worth having :D If you'd like 4x4, how about a second hand Octavia 4x4? You can get them at excellent prices, it has a detuned version of the RS engine so potential is good. Why follow the herd and go Volkswagen or Audi? If you want more info on Octavias, have a look at www.briskoda.net, we don't bite, honest.

Just wish I could trade up from my 1.4 16V. :D

ap_coupe 16 May 2003 04:26 PM

ok thankz but no thankz!I dont want no skoda! Me like the a3

Cupramax 16 May 2003 04:55 PM

How much are you looking at spending?... The Leon has the A3 interior as well....

GTI 16 May 2003 05:33 PM

Here some more useful help....

buy one they are great cars, not as involving as a Scoob but I guess you know that, I love them....and get black on black just because I like it lol.

Ok maybe not useful but I've only ever heard great reports about them, and also you feel more special in an Audi compared to Skoda and Seat!
Quite a bit better built too, even if some people say there not, they've got to be! Or where would Audis great reputation go to???
Anyways there lurvley!

ap_coupe 16 May 2003 05:56 PM

also can u get a atmos dv for them!I have heard u cant?

class_A 16 May 2003 06:35 PM

i hope you can't get a vent-to-air dump valve, cheesy whooshy noises aren't very Audi :D

Cupramax 16 May 2003 06:51 PM

Nope, no vent to air DV's on any VAG 1.8T's... they wont work with this type of engine due to the method of air metering...

fuz 16 May 2003 07:03 PM

seat 'Leon' 10/10

astraboy 16 May 2003 07:04 PM

my old man has one in thrtee dor format! its a fookin missile! (dont tell my old man I said that!!!)
astraboy.

ap_coupe 16 May 2003 07:42 PM

Cupramax 16 May 2003 07:44 PM

TaviaRS 17 May 2003 05:52 AM

Isn't the standard 1.8T 180Bhp? Or do I have it confused?

Funnily enough, just had a extended right foot session in one less than an hr ago, and heading out again in a while.

Owned a Scoob previously, and must say the build quality on these VAG's is of a certain level. Very good finish too. The one I've got access to is a 52 plate, so not sure if there have been any 'facelifts' etc since the launch.

Performace wise, quick car... even as standard. Remember, they can easily be tuned to 225 as thats the standard peak they offer on the engine. There is a company out there, www. qstuning.com , who for a bit of money (ok, maybe more than just a little) can make 'em shift! ;)

Don't get me wrong, I think Audi's are just jumped up VW's due to their price tag, but after a little shake-down today, I can understand where the money goes.

Hope thats a little help.

Disclaimer: All in IMO of course! :D

... and how do you think most Audi drivers react when they can't keep up with my inferior Skoda ?!

Cupramax 17 May 2003 05:57 PM

Isn't the standard 1.8T 180Bhp? Or do I have it confused?
Only on the Quattro, not the 2wd 1.8T Sport.

Raks 17 May 2003 06:23 PM

Worth considering Flat, but it should be noted that the Skoda is fundamentally a VAG product anyway. Just goes to show the premium for badge snobbery!

Out of curiousity, how much is it for a turbo'ed Skoda Octavia? Whats the quickest N/A engine they do?

Flat 4x4 17 May 2003 06:30 PM

Have a look on Briskoda.net for all the info.

Skoda, just as with Seat and Audi (unless you spend huge money) don't go for normally aspirated performance engines.

The vRS and 4x4 Turbo share the same Audi-VW drive by wire engine. The first is 180bhp (theoretically) and the latter is 150bhp.
My 4x4 is 220bhp on normal unleaded. SUL/Optimax = 225bhp.
List price new £15100 vRS £16+ 4x4.

Best decision I've made in a while and yes, I've owned Audi A4 Quattros and Turbo Subarus. Have a try!

Gren 19 May 2003 08:35 AM

150 engine in A3 is the same as the 180/190 in Skoda - different mapping. Youo should be able to get just over 200 out of it with just a chip.

It is a 150 in the A3 T Sport unless you get the Quattro when it goes up to 180 but the extra weight means the power to weight ratio is about the same.

what would scooby do 19 May 2003 08:40 AM

..also you have to be carefull in the wet, all the VW/Audio 1.8 turbos can't get off the line easily without traction control (lots of banging as the front suspension bounces around) :D

DAC 19 May 2003 09:21 AM

just following this thread out of interest

which is the best Skoda to get then - can the 4x4 be tuned easily to 220 bhp

I looked at the RS when they came out - but I prefer 4x4 - but 150bhp is just too low.

just interested for my next purchase

Flat 4x4 19 May 2003 10:08 AM

Dac

To answer your questions about the 4x4 Turbo Octavia

1) Yes,they're easily tuned. (I picked a reputable remapper)
2) Yes,150bhp is too low (I bought it after a 245bhp Impreza)
3) Mine has 218bhp /245lb/ft on normal unleaded, exhaust and filter
and on a day when the ambient temperature was 81f.
So that's 220-225bhp in more favourable conditions.

Don't forget that the 4x4 is also shorter geared than the Impreza or vRS so the acceleration is very respectable (not Impreza-quick)
but how many other drivers expect to be see a Skoda doing 30-70 in about 6.5 and not 10 ? The same applies at 70mph in the outside lane of the M1. That's the real world fun.

DAC 21 May 2003 08:39 AM

cheers flat 4x4

will seriously consider one next

Witchfinder 21 May 2003 11:12 AM

Skoda do a Superb with the 2.8 V6, and that doesn't have a turbo.
