Help!!

The controller? chip has blown on my old mans' work machine.

I have found an identical drive for sale on ebay. ( quantum fireball 10.2 GB )

the question is, if I were to swap the HD controller boards over, and then plug the drive into another machine , what are the chances of recovering the data??

anyone else done this , and if so did you get any problems with the HD controller looking at a different drive -so to speak?

The hard disk controller isn't fussy about what drive is attached to it.

You could remove the motherboard (which houses the faulty controller) and replace it, or more simply, just go out and buy a new PCI ATA133 controller card - they're pretty cheap - just plug it into a PCI slot and you're off.

Once installed just plug your original hard disks, cdroms, etc...into it.

are you talking about the controller on the motherboard?

I was talking about the actual chip on the hard drive itself - it has burnt out.

ah, you mentioned the controller on your dad's "machine" - I assumed that meant the controller on the motherboard!

Maybe.....depends if its the same motherboard and Rev....

Worth a try.....see if there are any backup solutions on EBay while your at it.

what do mean by backup solutions? - or has it just gone straight ver the top of my head :)

I just thought that since your fathers machine had suffered a failure with no obvious backup around that it might be the time to actually backup the machine before it fails next time .....;)

I don't see why not if you're sure it's the HDD's chip that's gone bang. I've done what you're suggesting with a tape drive and it worked so in thoery it's the same. If it's had it anyway you've got nothing to loose, well some money but hey :D

I bought the idenical drive anyway - its worth a flyer for £30

Could well work. It did for me a while ago with a Western Digital.

it did work - just changed the boards over on the HD's and bob's yer firkin :D

my old fella is a happy man now - mega brownie points for mj ;)

Might be worth buying a new HDD now or maybe a CD-RW to backup on to ;)

we have got a new HD for his machine - as for backing up I have asked the question here - :D

any comments appreciated - this backup lark is all a bit new to me.
