Anything I should know / look out for?!

Was going to buy something with a bit more oomph, but I now have to drive 36k miles a year so it's back to the diesels again :(

:eek: My dad has one of these and they do tend to go wrong :( A colleague has the petrol one and that's always in the garage too :rolleyes: sadly I can't tell you what to look for :( Great cars when they go but be careful

The above fact is very true :( My Dads had to have a new ecu after this happened :eek: A bit extreme I know.

Oh and it took a month to get an ecu from france :eek: he was due to go on holiday and tows a caravan and he nearly ended up with no car or holiday :eek:

Bloody nora lads!! Luckily I've been in touch with the leasing company and it seems to have had no problems, still has some warranty left too.

Any ideas about the best tuning route? A tuning box perhaps?

Is it true that tuning boxes don't alter the turbo boost - just the fueling? I've heard that chips are better for that very reason

Yep, tuning boxes alter the timing and duration of the injection, and don't up the boost.

From what I've read & heard, there's not much point in upping the boost on diesels, as the turbo is more to provide an excess of air (hence leaner & cleaner combustion) than to add power.

Bromley's claim +25bhp and +30lb-ft for their box.

It went for way over book (Blackbushe auctions).. but I managed to get a 2000W Passat 1.9TDi PD 115 SE, 60k with FSH for £7.4k. Result!

Nice one -- you can tuning-box the PD motor easily up to 250+ lb-ft of torque. Expect to get 50+ mpg on a run too :D

Over the first 3,000 miles in my Passat PD, I've averaged 45.7 mpg across all types of driving. You don't have to try to drive economically either.

If you're after a cheap tuning box, it's worth checking www.uk-mkivs.net, the Golf forum. They often come up for the PD motors (the one box fits all PDs) at around £150 to £200, as many of the people go from Tuning Box to full-on Revo / APR remaps.

High pressure fuel pump can go on the HDi's. Replacements cost approx £750!! Other than that just the usual crappy french electrics and build quality.
