I have two processes that are eating 99% processor usage: zipa.exe and a.exe

Anyone know what they are and how to get rid.

What OS is it? I can't seem to find out what they are for either. One way of finding out what they are is to stop them :D If someone complains about them turn them back on again.

Either way to stop them, Open Services and then search for a.exe and zipa.exe and then set them to disabled.

It's Windows 2000

I can stop them without any problem and the system works fine. But they start again on reboot.

I have done a search on google but can't see any info.

Have a look in the registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services. They should be listed there if they are installed as actual 'services'.

You can set them to disabled from the services applet.

Also look in these keys for any launch commands:-

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Once
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run OnceEx

They don't sound like any pucka W2K file to me, so I'd remove them. It's worth downloading Ad-Aware Personal and running that to check there's no spyware installed.

Do a full AV scan too, I don't like the sound of them either...

zipa.exe is used to unpack compressed files with a .zia extension.

I agree with ChrisB, don't like the sound of a.exe....

just an idea but here goes.

Run a search on your comp for the file a.exe
Open command prompt then navigate to the folder containing a.exe
Try the following type a.exe to run the file and not any info it returns.
Then type a.exe -unistall or a.exe -remove to try remove it as a service.
