If there is anyone out there who knows all about R/C cars, can you tell me if it is possible to buy a GT40 style racer and an idea of how much these things cost?
Cheers,
Mak.

Badger Stuffer 13 May 2003 01:48 PM

You want one of these......

http://www.towerhobbies.com/products...1_main_400.jpg

2 speed auto, very fast and virtually unbreakable.

Here's a video of mine.

Neil W 13 May 2003 03:15 PM

Is that a Tamiya Terra Crusher?

Badger Stuffer 13 May 2003 03:20 PM

No. A HPI Savage. i would highly reccomend this truck. Me and a mate have one each and have a blast racing and crashing them up the local BMX track, Motocross track (As in video) and over the Army land.

They are so fast it is unbelievable. So far I have even jumped mine off a 1/4 pipe and it must have gone at least 20ft+ in the air. Hit the ground, rolled, landed on it's wheels and screamed off. The only damage was some scratches on the body.(to be expected)

:D

Andrewza 13 May 2003 03:26 PM

I have a Tamiya Terra Crusher, pretty good fun, but not quite a as good as that savage only a .18 engine.

Badger Stuffer 13 May 2003 03:29 PM

When I first got the Savage I didn't realise that it was 2 speed. After I broke the engine in I had it out and was ripping along at what I thought was very fast.

All of a sudden the fecker shifted into 2nd, popped a little wheelie and was off. I sh1t my pants to say the least. Now I am used to it I love it.

:D

Lord Of The Bling... 13 May 2003 03:35 PM

wow sounds very very fast and a hole lot of fun!!!

so how much would one of those bad-boys cost me?

or any secondhand r/c car websites/forums??

cheers.

beemerboy 13 May 2003 04:07 PM

tamiya do a gt40(electric). or did.
you might have to go on ebay and pick one up 2nd hand.

these are the most authentic versions

failing that, buy a 1/10 scale nitro model, and get a gt40 body shell for it.

it wont look as real though!!!

BB:)

i'll try and dig you up some links

Badger Stuffer 13 May 2003 04:08 PM

New and ready to run (Just add fuel, glowstarter and batteries for the servo and handset) about £379 from Apex models.
Look on e-bay.com

Well worth it.

Scrappy2 13 May 2003 04:55 PM

And you can get a very cool reverse module for it... some more movies are available on the HPI site
http://www.hpiracing.com

Badger Stuffer 13 May 2003 04:59 PM

I've had mine for about 5 months now and have never really needed the reverse module.

It could use a self righting arm like the robots on Robot Wars as it is a pain in the arse when you tip it over and it's 100 metres away....:D

I'm gonna take mine out tonight to play over the muddy BMX track.

:D

SPelham 13 May 2003 05:19 PM

Must get me one of those :D

just watched the vid, feck me they are quick  even across deserted bmx tracks. Have you had any faults with it since you have had it ??

Badger Stuffer 13 May 2003 05:24 PM

I broke a dog bone but HPI sent me 4 uprated ones free.

Apart from that nothing. The pull start can give you blisters but I put an electric start on it for £25 and now it's great.

They are really fast. The videos don't do them justice. Like I said earlier. They are 2 speed automatics so just when you think thats it they shift into second and take off even faster.

There are loads of fanncy bits you can get and some people like to keep theirs looking in show condition. We however just give them a quick wipe, a blast of WD40 and then off again.

:D

Badger Stuffer 14 May 2003 09:42 AM

Well...........It's dirty now. Loads of puddles and this morning the mud had dried on.......

Happy days.........:D

MarkO 14 May 2003 11:29 AM

Get one and paint it up the same as your own car. That's what I did. :D

And I wasn't the only one. :D :D :D

Franx 14 May 2003 11:45 AM

You can get a GT40 body shell off - www.die-cast-models.com - although that's only the body. Apparently you can buy the other bits seperately....http://216.40.249.192/s/contrib/drow...en-stripes.gif..Why not just buy a real one though?http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/contrib/corky/corkysm49.gifhttp://smilies.jeeptalk.org/contrib/corky/corkysm49.gif

Hey MarkO where did you get those? Very neat..http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/contrib/corky/corkysm49.gif

Badger Stuffer 14 May 2003 11:46 AM

LOL @ MarkO.....That's quality.

Maybe I should build a lifesize Savage truck...:D

It's supposed to have the equivilent to 1600 bhp per tonne....

:D

MarkO 14 May 2003 11:52 AM

They aren't all mine.

The silver ones (big & small ;)) were mine, although the big one's gone to a new home now. The yellow one is owned by a guy with a Yellow STI 5, and the other two are owned by two other chaps who also post on here now and again. :D

Unfortunately, I bust the arm on the steering servo that day, so the little car's been in a box ever since then (April last year) 'cos I've not had time to fix it. :(

Badger Stuffer - I cant seem to download any of your clips! Is it just me or is the site down?

Simon.

P1Fanatic 15 May 2003 11:35 AM

Ah - downloads work now. Cool clips. Might have to put that on the gadgets-to-buy list. :D

Roll on the weekend..........:D

Z_chromozone in london 15 May 2003 12:33 PM

I used to have a Mugan RC car with a 1.2 Hp engine. The mags used to recon on speeds up to 70 mph running 40% nitrous/methonol. (I never verified that and it seems a bit much to me).

You needed insurance to run it in a public place though about 5 kg doing 70 mph is gunna smash bones to splinters.

I never found anyone that wanted to race and the nearest club was 20 miles away, so I sold it.

They are great fun though, and you can build an engine to a given spec. Even changing the head gaskets and stuff when you ramp the nitrous up, just to lower the compression a little. Mine had a clutch and breaks that you could set up. Sadly no reverse, as no gear box. They smell like cooking chips, due to the castor oil mix.

Vids look great!!!!!!!!

Z

Badger Stuffer 15 May 2003 12:39 PM

70 mph....Feck.

I recon that my savage does between 40 and 45 mph running on 16% nitro. My mate uses 20% Nitro but he has more problems with tuning than me......:D

Jye 15 May 2003 12:43 PM

All I can say is try one of these for fun, OK its not much use
off road but on a decent track its the F1 of RC cars. 0-100 km/h in 1.7 sec, top speed 70 - 80 mph on the straights but can be geared for 100 mph, rev's to over 40,000 rpm.

Now thats a R/C car, I regularly crash both of mine :D :D

http://www.mytsn.com/products/specs.asp?prid=1631

Badger Stuffer 15 May 2003 12:47 PM

Jye......

Engine and pipe, body, radio equipment

So add another £150 - £200 for a decent set then.

I have never been a fan of the road going R/C Cars. I much prefer thrashing mine through puddles, over jumps and pulling wheelies.

:D

Jye 15 May 2003 12:52 PM

Yeah, I throw away my cheque book regularly BS, damn fragile they are compared to the off roaders, but a must see at full chat on a decent track, would deffo like a big off-roader like yours to add to my collection :D :D

And BTW BS, top spec engines cost over £300, even decent pipes are about £100 :D

Badger Stuffer 15 May 2003 12:57 PM

I agree. There is a track near me that has regular races and they are dam quick.

I can do this to my truck though and it then handles as well as a road type car...
