I was just on my way up to the Bird's house when the Check Engine light came on. I wasn't doing anything mad, just sat at 30 mph. I decided to complete my 2 mile journey and investigate further.
Anyway, this didn't happen cos the light went out. It was on for less than a mile.
Has anyone ever had this? Should it be sommat to worry about?
What is my next move? is it worth connecting the wires under the dash to get a fault code, or will i not find one with the light being out now?

Never had this myself-but could the car be asking for a service?

Had it's 45k in Feb and now is only just short of 47k.

brun, looks like these 'check engine' lights rarely stay on. ecu should keep last few errors logged, so connectin the plugs should reveal what it was....

When I had this problem it turned out to be a faulty sensor! Probably nothing to worry about.

Right, i've just done the Black connector thing.
If i've got it right then it appears i have two issues.
Code 12 - Starter Switch.
Code 22 - Knock Sensor.

As the light is not on now do i assume all is well or do i pay the dealer a visit?

With regard to the starter switch, i assume that if it was knacked, the car wouldn't go?

I've done some searching around the history files but i can't find any real info on the knock sensor.
Would my car have running issues if the sensor was broken?

I've just had my Knock sensor replaced (under warrantee) - NO symptoms apart from "Check Engine" light......

Of course, just double-check that it IS a faulty sensor, as opposed to a sensor doing it's job - in this case, detecting knock.....

Get it down to a dealer or specialist is my advice :)

Several cars store the starter switch code and it hasn't seemed significant, also I couldn't find any documentation on causes except for bad resistance/wiring. If the car starts well it may just be an over-zealous ECU check on some cars, or poor grounding.

Knock sensor one does not trigger because of knock, but because of abnormal resistance across the knock sensor inputs. Get this one checked and drive off boost until it is.

This seems a good time to sort myself out with a knocklink i think :)

Would anyone like to give me an idea how much a knock sensor is gonna rip me? just so i know what to expect, if it's dead.

'bout £97 inc vat from a dealer. ALTHOUGH check that its not just the wiring thats bu66ered, you'l need to take the intercooler out for this :D

If you want a knocklink you will still need your original knock sensor working, otherwise the ecu isn't happy.

Visited the dealer. They were happy that there was no problems to worry about :)
Had the fault codes removed and i was on my way.
I hope that is the end of the affair :)

Just come back from a blast, and you guessed it "CHECK LIGHT" :(

Did the black connector thing and has returned the Knock Sensor code again.
I'll be back on the phone to my dealer in the morn to order the said bit.
I suppose it's better paying out £100 now, than £4k for a new engine.

Phoned my dealer to order the Knock Sensor.
£48 + vat came the reply :)

oooop norf prices. :( Do have fun changing it over ha ha ha haaaaa. :D

p.s. buy one of those magnetic telescopic pen tools if you don;t already have one.

Just as a side note - all this off boost driving is doing wonders for my fuel consumption :D At the moment i've done 183 miles and i've got more than a third of a tank left. If memory serves, 80 of those miles were normal driving before the sensor went.

Just got back from having my Sensor fitted, and about time too :D
Over a week without boost makes it feel sooooooooooo fast.
The damage was £88.75 fitted.
I have a couple of complaints about the service from F.R Pulleyn though.
1./ Their coffee machine doesn't accept 50p coins :(
2./ The damn remote to the tv didn't work properly, so i had to sit through the best that CITV had to offer.
Other than that, fantastic as usual.
