Under heavy braking the front wheels will splay slightly outwards which obviously causes less tyre pattern to be in contact with th eroad surface resulting a tendancy (certainty ;) ) for the car to understeer. This also causes flexing of the brake lines etc and is generally bad news.

The bumpsteer mod shortens some shims or something in the steering rack or another techinical thingy  and therefore stiffens up the front and keeps the thing stable under braking. This also stabilises the car especially when braking from higher speeds :)

The results on my car were to leave it with a very planted but slightly tail happy feel :D

Hope that helps and hope someone will ineveitably describe the shim thingies in correct technical fashion :D
